Would you take an 03 Disco II that has 106k miles and zero codes or lights to Alaska from Louisiana?? Am I crazy?

^^This

Do you know this car's service history/have you had it serviced, or is this a truck you just bought and you're gonna hope it gets you there?

Yep, it will be in as good of shape as possible for a 12 year old Disco. Thing is pretty mint, will have Prop shafts rebuilt, ball joints, all new fluids, filters, etc...

I figure if it dies, I'll just leave it there and sell it and fly home.

I'm a relatively new Land Rover owner, what spare parts would a smart Rover owner bring along for a month long trip to the Yukon territory and Alaska??? I won't be doing any hard core off roading, just the forest roads.

It sounds like you're gonna throw some money before you start your journey. I would get underneath it and figure out what leaks you have, and how critical they are, then overhaul your cooling system. Hoses/radiator/thermostat/etc. That's probably the main thing that'll put you on the side of the road if you aren't wheeling. Well, that and the rear driveshaft coming apart, but you said you were going to have both shafts rebuilt.

I've been under it. Only a Class 1 leak on transfer case and a little moisture on power steering pump. Adding new 180 T stat, flushing and changing out coolant to green stuff. I've replaced a lot of stuff already and it is currently at my mechanics getting the ABS and brakes overhauled.

I know it is totally my decision, just thought I would throw it out there and see how confident you guys are with your Rovers. I have a Tundra 4x4 also, so I don't have to take the Rover.

Throttle heater?? Is that a real thing? I'm 43 and while I'm not a professional mechanic, I've done a lot of wrenching in my life. First I've heard of a throttle heater. Is this close to the muffler bearings and chem light batteries??

Thanks for the tip on Crank Position Sensor and brake light switch.

Anyone else want to add to the spares list?

I think without it the throttle would ice up in really cold climates and possibly stick open . I think most engines run coolant thru the throttle to avoid that . Its just that the disco2 heater is problematic .

Oh I know what you are talking about now. You mean under the throttle body, and yes I do remember seeing a little drop of coolant in that area the other day. Can you tell me what the resulting issue would be if there is a leak??

You could loose enough coolant to cause the truck to overheat if your driving that far . It may be a couple drips now but its not going to start leaking less .

I see. So I guess a jug or two of coolant needs to be packed.

I will be replacing those hoses and clamps and might just pack some extra hoses/clamps just in case.

Thank you so much for the input. Discoweb is awesome!

Are you on airbags or coil springs in the back? If you're still on air, I'd swap to coils before the trip. Add a spare rotoflex and bring enough rubber hose to replace the hard plastic lines that run to and from the throttle body heater.

My throttle body heater bled out, had it replaced. Like the man said, it's not going to start leaking less.

I'd take my '04 up to AK in a heartbeat....if I only had the time.

Brake light switch is a good idea too, left me stranded in downtown Denver in my old Disco.

Just thoroughly go through all systems and make sure they are sound. Coolant system spares are a good idea.

May as well change the mass air flow sensor if it has not been done, or take a spare, it's due to fail any time soon. Search for a Delphi mass air flow sensor at rockauto.com, cheaper than the OEM one.
Definitely replace the throttle body heater now to save yourself headaches later.
Change the crank position sensor now, it's a royal pain in the ass to do in a parking lot.
Replace those thin plastic radiator hoses, one running from the left top of the radiator to the reservoir tank, another running from the throttle body heater to the reservoir tank. They get brittle and break for no reason.
New spark plug wires.
Load up the trunk area with cash.
And a St Christopher on the dash - the patron saint of travelers :)
