All in One Brake Kit

Is there a all in one brake kit that has rotors, calipers, and pads the group recommends? i am not ricky racer so i do not need flash. I do however plan on keeping this Disco as a forever toy that i hope to make a multi-month trip in so i don't mind putting money into it for components that will last.

Zach (discophoto here) at Rovers North hooked me up with a complete package when I did the D110 rear brakes on my 95 Disco. If you’re looking to replace your brakes, definitely look into upgrading to 110s in the back at least. There is no hassle to do it, and it makes changing pads WAY easier down the road. I found the genuine pads didn’t last as long as I hoped, so I’m trying the prolines now. They squeal a bit early on, so we’ll see.

There’s a thread for this upgrade on dweb somewhere. It’s worth a look.

EBC makes a kit, but it doesn't include the calipers. Still, the brakes are outstanding and well-made in England, rather than China. You don't need to race to use them, you just need to want quality brakes. That said, they don't fade easily, and they last quite some time.

It's actually pretty easy to rebuild calipers, but I'll bet any part supplier here can get you something decent if you don't feel like it.

I’m curious, why do you feel the D110 set up on the rear is needed? I upgraded the front to Defender vented but stayed with stock on the rears. My logic was the fronts do most the work. Not criticizing at all, I just want to learn about the D110 rear setup.

I had been having problems keeping my rear brake pads on the minuscule lip inside the calipers, so after replacing them twice (Autozone pads, for reference - almost an exact fit but that 1mm makes all the difference) , I thought there must be a better way.

When I came across a lengthy thread on here regarding the D110 upgrade, it seemed like it made sense to do since it was time to replace my rotors anyway. I haven't noticed a marked improvement in braking, but the pads now stay in place since they're actually physically pinned instead of pressed down by a spring. That alone is worth the swap. And technically, it's the D110 front setup installed on the Disco rear:

Front Non-Vented Setup(requires bending of hard line from flex to caliper)
Caliper: LH: RTC5573
RH: RTC5572
Rotors: LR017951
Pads: SFP000260
Fitting kit: RTC5001 (as per Zach at Rovers North)

So if I'm going to do all the work involved in replacing the rear brakes anyway, it made sense to me to replace them with easier to maintain brakes for the future. And for the original poster, replace the bearing seals while you're at it since it's all open to the world at that point.

I read your reply and then reviewed the other post. I wish I had known about this option a month ago. I do like the 110 setup much better. I paid more for my rebuilt D1 calipers than could have paid for the better 110 units. I do wonder why LR wouldn’t have used the same setup on all the trucks that use that hardware. Seems like a waste money to have different versions.

I tend to be a parts hoarder. I’ll probably buy 110 the setup now for the next time I do the brakes... years from now. Thanks for the reply and information.

Not exactly accurate. D110 front calipers are a performance improvement in the front of a D1. D110 rear calipers are a maintenance improvement(pins instead of springs) in the rear of a D1.
Fronts don't go in rears and vice versa.

If I had to guess, the Defender units had to handle a greater variety of variants, and would have been produced for large, up-front orders. They'd have needed to keep a certain number around at all times, as well. The Discovery calipers could be specified for a single vehicle variant with less predictable sales, and could thus be manufactured more cheaply, and a less organized stock could be kept.

If the Wolf variants used the same caliper, every one of them would have to handle the civilian mining and military LWV requirements. All the Discovery calipers have to deal with is a diesel that weighs a few more pounds than a V8. Even if the Wolf is different, the things still have to stop a loaded High-Cap.

Now, that's nearly all supposition, but it's why I'd do it. If there's another reason, I'd like to know, as well.

Right, 46mm pistons vs the D1 41mm pistons. Same caliper as the D90 only without the spacer so you can run solid rotors.
I've done both the front and rear 110 caliper upgrades, albeit on two different trucks I own.

Thanks for the catch on that. For anyone's future reference, I was wrong about the front on the rear. Fortunately, Zach sent the right stuff since he knows his business and I'm still figuring it out. It was my fault for posting wrong information. Sorry about that.

My actual order is below in case anyone wants to do this in the future. Should I/Can I go back and remove my post so it doesn't mess up somebody down the road? Thanks again for noting it. As always, it's a very helpful place to be here.

Looks good. Next time get a dozen drive flange gaskets and lock washers. They're cheap and I end up using them frequently it seems.

Just about finished with the 110 rotor and caliper swap up front, rotors and hubs done, but I have swivel leaks that I can't be ignored any longer. When I remove the hubs for the swivel teardown, do I need to replace the brand new inner bearing hub grease seal or can I leave it in and reuse?

Leave and reuse, so long as it didn't get abused or damaged and there's no sign of leaking.

For those that have gone to 110 fronts, did you use the retainer clips that came with the pads and lock against the pins or use the springs over the pins like in the original setup? Does it even matter?
