Ok, here3 is the deal. have searched the archives and have called a couple shops here locally and ahve gotten 2 different types of fluid to use in my '97. One guy said to use dexronlll, another said to use dexronll. Can some one out there tell me which to use. I did the search and only found a quantity to use to change fluid. Thanks fpr all the help.

yup, dex3

i was all confused too trying to find dex2 as required by my old 1994 rangie manual.

if you read the fine print on the dex3 bottle, it reads something like 'compatible with dex2' where dex3 is an improvement on dex2 but works for cars that require dex2.

I changed from standard to Amsoil synthetic

Try using Amsoil as a replacement. I've changed both diffs, t-case, transmission, and oil to this and I've noticed an improvement in fuel economy. You'll have to ask your Amsoil dealer to recommend the appropriate type given your vehicle and it's mileage. By the way, I have a D1 with 198,000 miles and I just switched over at about 191,000 miles. The improvement is has taken me from 240-250 miles/tank gas to 270-280 miles/tank. It adds up with fuel prices as they are!

The ZFHP22 or ZFHP24 4 speed autobox used in Range Rovers, Discoverys and Defenders will run quite happily on ATF DII or DIII. DII used to be the officially recommended fluid for this box before the advent of DIII.

DIII is in fact an evolution of DII fluid and contains improved friction modifiers. Therefore DIII is a better specified fluid than DII and should improve gearbox life and reliability.

Mr Antichrist,

The owners manual says Dexron II, but you will have a hard time finding it, thus use Dexron III.

What discodon says about evolution is correct, I believe.

Most DIII say "superceeds DII" or "use for all DII applications", something to that effect.
At least the one's I've bought. So the manual, plus reading lables will get you the right stuff, which was really my point. I just didn't want to say, "RTFM" :D
