Stopped at RR crossing and started to drive when no more forward motion.

Noise by transmission / transfer box.

At dealer to find out what happened.

I'd say that was a pretty good Rover day. At least it had the decency to quit before the railroad crossing, rather than on it.

Cheers,

@Kennith, agreed and only a mile from the house, yet, totally unexpected. And what sucks is have been not driving for 6 weeks due to a severed Achilles' tendon and this was the maiden voyage.

@KyleT, certainly one of the possibilities. Output shaft also an option.

Being in Switzerland I'm debating on just getting a reman transmission and transfer box from Ashcroft as shipping is relatively inexpensive.

We shall see what has happened and go from there.

@Dan, yes both are stock diffs. Noise though emitting from transmission or transfer box. However, noise travels through the drivetrain so certainly a possibility. Thx

@Discophoto (Zack, right?) Yes, although more of a major refurb than a restore.

@Devildog-thanks

Beautiful truck....glad you weren't too far from home. Am I the only one who cringed at "severed Achilles tendon" ?

Thx to all for the compliments on the Rover. It is a great Rangie and has taken us many places off-road in France and Italy. All heavily laden so guess eventually something was due to break.

Ah yes, the Achilles' tendon. Final night of a work event in Budapest at a nightclub dancing with a 20 something colleague when (like the Rover) it just snapped and I fell to the floor. And needless to say I'm way past a 20 something. Went to the hospital in Budapest, had a cast put on, and flew back to Switzerland for the operation. This was literally the first I drove in six weeks.

This is a great opportunity to invent a better story and put it in the make up lies thread.

You shoulda told us you were qualifying for the TV show American Ninja Warrior...I've seen several Achilles blowouts on that show.
I'd have believed you...

Maybe your ZF output splines are toast?
Are you sure the High/Low didnt slip into neutral? Mine has done that several times and freaks me out EVERY time...

Nice pic...even breakdowns look cooler in Switzerland.

@Kennith-Our life now sometimes seems more fiction than reality as it is.

@Nomar-This certainly is a possibility and the noise kinda leads to that. Nope on the hi/low box-mine is still pretty tight when shifting. Hopefully will know this week.

Not sure if you have the truck in your possession still or not, but if so you could lock the t-case that would tell you if it's a busted diff. If you lock the t-case and the truck moves, it's the diff. If you lock the t-case and nothing happens you have issues somewhere else.

If the truck moves when the t-case is locked, unlock the t-case again and put the truck in gear. Once in gear, peep under the truck to see which driveshaft is spinning and that will tell you which diff is toast.

Dan, I don't see anything from the OP to suggest he has a LT230 TC. If the TC is stock and a diff is broken I'd expect the viscous coupling unit would engage and the truck would have moved after a few seconds.

There. I said it. Viscous coupling unit.

SOB..I can't even imagine how badly that hurt. This just reinforces my choice to sit, drink, and watch when others start dancing. Lol
