Battery lifespan?

The date sticker on the battery in my D1 shows 2014, installed by previous owner. Not that I'm looking to spend money, but it's good to have a plan in case I need to. I'm curious about the durability folks are getting from their batteries. Mine is not one I recognize, probably a low end to mid-range auto parts store branded model, so nothing fancy.

I got 3 years and 4 months out of a Bosch battery. When it went south, possibly by my failing alternator, I got a prorated price on a Champion. This was at Pep Boys, and they've been very good with batteries for me.

I usually get about 5 - 6 years from an automotive battery. But i've had better also (2 batteries in 18 years in my Corvette)

Some of that depends on how you "maintain" the battery. If the vehichle sits for long periods without a trickle charger, I get less life out of the battery.

IMO, there is no real answer to this. 4 years is a good average, but I regularly see batteries fail in much shorter time periods and also some last much longer.

Based on the input so far I should be glad that the battery has made it this long and I shouldn't be surprised if I need to replace it soon. Especially if I want to run the ridiculous amount of auxiliary halogen lights I now own.

I think if you pay attention you get signs before the battery takes a shit altogether. Like slow cranking. In Disco1 the door lock actuators start getting lazy. We can test batteries now with a lot higher tech equipment than just the old fashion load test. I like Jymmie's estimate of 4 years. Thats about when I change my wife's battery as preventative maintenance. The battery in my chevy cruiz is 8 years old. I threw jumper cables in the trunk when it was 5 years old. Not sure the car will outlive a new battery. I've kept that car original, even the oil and filter.

Put in one of these 5 years ago - Odyssey 34-PC1500T and not a hiccup since. Previously had 3 Optima red tops take a shit in 4 years.

Worth every penny to me.

mine all last 10+ years, but i'm not running a bunch of extra stupid shit off them. Also sometimes there are just bad production runs where they wont even last a year. Most dry cells die from lack of use.

depends on where you live, here in Hot AZ, 3 years is a miracle on a garden variety battery. Usually 24-30 months, is average. Costco / Interstate warranty is ideal for me, as I haven't paid for a new battery in 10+ years..
