Hunting or just-in-case?

Just in case, I left it opened ended just to see what people recommended.

I'll be spending a couple of weeks in the backwoods this summer and I'm weighing my options. A rifle would certainly be the most effective option but a pistol would be so much easier to carry.

You'd have to be a barb-wire-shitting, full-fledged bad motherfucker to effectively use any handgun against a grizzly; especially in a defensive situation.

Save the last round for yourself. It'll be a blessed relief as the bear is wearing your guts as a hat.

Where's Andrew Homan? I'd like to read his thoughts on this matter.

LOL. That is the funniest thing I have read on here in a long time.
Well said.

Heh, that's what my dad always told us growing up. He was from the west and we spent summers around Yellowstone. I appreciate the point - nothing on the range comes close to being charged by an 800 hundred pound grizzly. Hell, most attacks occur when you surprise the bear at close range. Simply reacting in time would be an issue.

Still, I'd prefer to have the option. I guess that's the American in me.

Funny, but he made a Facebook post about going to look for some big bears today. If I remember correctly, he is a fan of the .45-70 guide gun and a Glock 10mm.

I can't blame you for wanting to have a piece with you in the boonies. Recognize that every firearm has its good and bad features for your particular task.

A Glock 20 10mm, while the cat's ass, will not hold a candle to a stainless/synthetic M70 .375 H&H with solids when it comes to stopping a bear. But you can't put a Model 70 in a hip or shoulder holster.

Trade-offs and limitations are a bitch.

i used to daily carry my G20C, i'd never put that up against a bear....that .50 revolver however, that'll do work.

I didn't say the G20 would be the best option. I'd rather be 100 yards away and have a Remington 700 in .308 or .338, but if I was hiking and needed a reasonable size pistol on the hip, it could be an option. But, then again, I don't see myself walking into the woods with the intention of looking for a big ass bear either.

The bear you are looking for is probably not as big a problem as the bear you arent looking for.
