You'd have to be a barb-wire-shitting, full-fledged bad motherfucker to effectively use any handgun against a grizzly; especially in a defensive situation.

Save the last round for yourself. It'll be a blessed relief as the bear is wearing your guts as a hat.

Where's Andrew Homan? I'd like to read his thoughts on this matter.

I've said it before. Handguns are a faster draw.

Most people have neither the cause nor the inclination to wander about the wilderness with a noteworthy rifle in any manner of ready posture, and in such an attack, that can be a terminal condition.

Plenty of handguns are available chambered for cartridges that are very powerful. They are often chosen in situations where the nature of a dangerous journey renders high levels of readiness overly inconvenient.

You won't often catch me with a rifle on my chest unless I'm expecting, planning, or guarding.

Cheers,

Kennith

Thanks man. I'd be the first to shake your had and buy you a beer after you get up close and personal with a bear, and take it down with a pistol. I'm pretty good with my Glocks, but don't want to ask for that kinda fight, if I can avoid it. If that makes my balls smaller than yours, I'm fine with it. If one happens to break in my house I'll deal with it, but I'm not going to look for it.

You aren't meant to "look" for large, dangerous animals unless you are securing an area, scouting, or hunting.

Funny, but he made a Facebook post about going to look for some big bears today. If I remember correctly, he is a fan of the .45-70 guide gun and a Glock 10mm.

Yep guide gun all the way. 45-70 is a great round. A handgun is a last resort for sure. My good friend and neighbor up here is a fish and game tech who does nothing but deal with brown bears. Over the last 25 years he has killed around 100 brown bears all with a 12 Ga with slugs. Swears by a shotgun for defense on bears.

I go look for them all the time. Often with success. Its a rush to be around them. I have to admit it not as big of a deal as people make it out to be. My first close encounter was nose to nose at ten yards. He didn't back down and I stood my ground. It ended well when he wandered off in disgust. They are just a part of life up here. They can be a pain when the get in your trash or shed and destroy whatever they want.

Ballistically I wonder how 300BLK would do on a bear-sized adversary.

No idea, but considering that a 300BLK makes a 308Win look like a beast, I wouldn't want to experiment with it on something as large as a bear.

If I were hunting bear, I'd bring my .338WinMag. It packs a punch without being a complete pain to shoot.

Oh, if I were hunting a bear I think something like .338 is absolutely the correct tool for the job-I was more wondering about along the lines of what the OP mentioned further in the post, spending a few weeks in the backwoods. It seemed to me that there wasn't a need/desire for a gun to take game, more of a personal protection role.

Thus a nice compact 9" AR in 300BLK would be an interesting thought; especially since at close range the quantity of rounds coming downrange would have a quality all to its own. The terminal ballistics at short range aren't too bad.

Mind you I'm not a huge fan of 300BLK and don't own any, I've built one for a friend and it seems decent enough but I don't like mixing calibers that can use the same magazines.

Would this have enough punch for a bear gun? Then I can stab it with my bayonet after I shoot it.

338 win mg is a good round. When I hunt brown bear I carry a 375 ruger. Many bear have been killed with 300 win mag and just plain Ole 3006s.

Is an AR the only fun you know of?

Why not just carry pepper spray. Not Kool enough?

In terms of firearms, are you really asking that question of me?
It was a legit thought based off the OP, if I were wandering around the backwoods with the possibility of encountering bears (but not seeking them out to hunt) a PDW platform in 300BLK, i.e. a compact AR, was intriguing. To a point its what I know, 18 years of carrying one does that to a person-especially when your life counts on ability to employ it.

Of course I also know the M40 series pretty well too, and the M82, as well as AK's of course, and 870's (and M9's but those are a joke) but none of them were the relevant to my thought on a larger caliber, decent terminal ballistic performance, short range, compact performance capability. Except perhaps a Krink in 7.62x39, but I don't like AKs and find them uncompelling.

I imagine you knew all that though, based off your breadth of knowledge.

Bear spray has a higher capsicum content than plain, old people pepper spray.

(place banal crack about my mom here)
