Brake lines failed

The brake tubes running on top of the frame rail ruptured the other day. Currently my best guess it was caused by rust. I'm thinking about replacing them but just using two long lengths of braided stainless hose. Wouldn't have to worry about rust and they would be easy to feed back through.

Does anyone know the size and fittings needed? I think the tube is 3/16 but not sure on the fittings.

Also is there any reason to not go this route?

Thanks

D1? 3/16" M10x1.0 bubble flare.
That's the size of a standard fitting on a D1. If you're making your own lines you could make the fittings whatever you want I guess.
I wouldn't bother with the expense of replacing hard lines with stainless. New hard lines should last another 15-20 years.

It's a D2.

A place local is quoting around $2.50/ft of DOT braided stainless. I would just need the fitting and coupler to go to the tubing off the abs modulator.

I figure 2.50 isn't too bad and I would never have to worry about it again.

If you use copper/nickel line from NAPA you won't ever have to worry about it either.
Flexible line may or may not have as good flow as metal line. If it doesn't, you could end up having to replace it because your brakes aren't as firm.

I would just get a factory line that is already bent the way you need it.

You have any idea how much those run? Last time I checked the prebent line that runs between the flexible line and caliper on a D1 was about $70 I think. That vs $5 for a 12" piece of straight line you can bend yourself by hand.

$70 seems pretty reasonable to me. I would rather pay more for the part that fits as it did from the factory. I can see why one would use some generic brake line that they have to bend themselves, but I would just rather have the correct part since it isn't that expensive.

The correct part is the right sized line with the correct fittings. Whether a machine bends it or its bent by hand is besides the point.
This is NOT a $110 part.

And for some reason the passenger side is only $70.
