Brake upgrade on my DI

I replaced all four calipers on my disco I along with rotors. Up front I used the bigger 110 calipers and vented rotors. I also used s/s flex lines, Ferodo pads and new hardware too. The front calipers did require fabricating new hard lines at the swivel balls. A quart of new brake fluid was used through the bleed portion. I can report that this truck actually stops now. Really stops! I can lock up the tires on dry pavement if I want to. It has never remotely performed like this before. The confidence of having functioning brakes cannot be overstated.

Yup. I did this on my D1 a while back and the performance is improved. Are you sure you used 110 calipers up front? If you installed vented rotors (as opposed to slotted or cross-drilled) they were probably 90 calipers, but mechanically the same thing.

depends on the year 110. I think 200tdi had 110 specific non vented brakes and 300tdi had the same front brakes as a 90

The brake upgrade is too good. With 245/75s I'm sliding all over the place in the rain, can't wait for snow. On the other hand, dropping from 70 to 40 on the highway is sports-car level fantastic, and it will help with towing the boat around for sure.

Six in one hand, half a dozen in the other.

Pretty much the same experience here.
On the first drive to work with 110 front calipers, I was able to lock up the tires when somebody swerved into my lane, on dry pavement. It never happened before even with stock-sized tires.

Now, backing down a steep hill is somewhat less impressive.

Just the front.
Now that I've replaced both front ABS sensors, I found out that ABS still works. Same annoying self while braking over uneven terrain.

ABS is function of sensors and the hydraulic unit. Mine doesn't work so I pulled the fuse and the binnacle lamp. Of all the discos I've owned only one had working ABS....sometimes.

Mine worked great until one day it didn't and I almost rear ended someone. Fool me once...

Cleaned a bunch of crap out of the cylinder and cleaned the bodies of the sensors. New bushings and oil seals did the trick. Works like new (which may not be what you want).

If you use the D-90 calipers you do not need to make new hard lines. You just re-bend the stock lines slightly. Takes 30-seconds.

But agreed this is one of the top-5 mods to do to a Disco.

Given the age of D1's and how brittle the lines are it's worth the $10 for two lengths of new supple lines to bend up.

Make sure your wheel bearings are tight. If you can move the wheel much that motion pushes the sensor back out.

I wonder how much better you guys brakes would have worked if you just fixed the stock set up. I don't know cause I never did the defender caliper swap thing you talk about. But I have fixed a bunch of really shitty feeling Disco1 brake systems by replacing the rusted up pistons and seals in all the calipers and replacing the rotors.

For about 10 years I've been using that really plyable brake line that comes in a roll about 12 in in diameter. I kind of thought it was going to be too soft but haven't had any issues with it. You can bend that shit by hand its so soft. Doesn't kink when you try to make tight bends.

I am assuming that most upgrade and use new calipers, right?

I just buy a 12 or 18" hardline from PepBoys. Comes with the metric bubble fittings already on it. I have a set of 3/16" bending pliers for the tight turns.

Would I have to buy adapters to make this connection? Have someone with a flare tool double flare the line? Or is this easily bendable line so soft if I screw it together it will make its own flare? This whole bake line kit was all good up to this point.

See if you can find someone to flare it for you. Or call AB would better
