Need some help identifying the hose and the probable cause of the issue.

Left side photo shows the problem at the bottom where it enters the block. Right side is up close, and it looks like the metal line is rusting in several spots. My theory is that the rust has clogged up the rubber line and thats why im seeing a bulge, but im not sure what the line is for? I suppose the next concern I have is all that gunk is finding its way into the block…

Should I just replace the metal lines? Can’t imagine that being cheap so if I go that route, any one know a more affordable approach?

Its the output to the heater core, and it transitions from I think 1" to 3/4". wouldnt hurt to flush everything out and replace that hose and both heater hoses. blast them out with a garden hose while you're at it.

Replace the hose with the correct part.

Although I don't know the exact factory part number, you can see it here on AB. It connects the heater manifold to one of the pipes coming from the heater core. As robertf said above, it does transition from 3/4" (pipe end) to 1" (manifold end). Trying to use a section of standard 1" heater hose (or worse, forcing a 3/4" hose onto both fittings) is NOT the way to do it. Your pic shows someone did exactly that and then tried to seal the pipe end with gasket sealant.

On my '97, which I've owned since brand new, I've replaced this particular hose over half a dozen times I'm guessing, if not more. The fact that it's rather hidden, and also under a lot of heat and stress, triggers my Engineer Overkill function.

Replace the hose with the correct part, although it will be messy because of the coolant coming out of the pipe. Have some additional 50/50 coolant on hand.

I've used Gates 3/4 fuel injection line in that spot on several D1's and it's never done anything like in that picture. That's what the OEM looked like when I replaced it however.

I didn’t want to wait for the correct hose to arrive and did the same with 3/4 heater hose. Seems to be holding up just fine but I now have the correct hose “on the shelf” in case it is no longer just fine down the road.
