Hi All,

Need some help troubleshooting on 97 Disco. Over the weekend the rig started misfiring/hestitating at cruising speed. CE Light on. Replaced plugs and tried some fuel additive (Redline). No change. Pulled the codes yesterday and here is what came up.

P0300- Randon Misfire
P0305- Misfire #5
P0420- Bank 1 Cat Efficiency below threshold. Most likely due to misfire.
P1313- No idea
P1316- No idea

Cleared codes and drove around the block. Drove normal.

I am replacing the wires at lunch and will check again.

Also, the MAF is reading 0 g/s. Should be around 9 g/s right? I unplugged the MAF during test to see if it would change and now it idles really high. Any thoughts on this?

was ce light already on or did this cause it to come on?

p1313=catalyst fault damage fault bank a
p1316misfire due to excessive emissions fault

when you replaced maf did it still idle high?

Anthony,

The CE light came after the misfire started. The misfire started out very rarely and then over a couple of days became worse.

During the test, I undid the air filter and disconnected the MAF while engine was running. (Before, the idle was perfect and had no problems.) Was trying to see if I could get the meter reading to change. Once plug pulled from MAF, engine bogged down and then revved up to a high idle. Plugged MAF back in and no change in idle. I unhooked the battery to reset the computer. Could I have damaged the MAF by unplugging it? Seems unlikely. I have done things like that before. I would also think a new code would come up. But after clearing the codes and driving around the block, nothing. Runs fine at low speed with no CE light on. Once I change the plug wires I will drive on the highway and see what happens. Thanks

unplugging the maf should not hurt it as i have unplugged mine on several occasions. is there anyone with whom you can switch the maf out with to check it? when you pull maf the engine should idle high, this tells you maf is functioning. but when you replace it, it should go back down to norm. rpm,s.. have you got it to go back down at all yet?

Well, changed the plugs and wires today. Drove around on the highway for a few minutes and it started hesitating again. $%#. No check engine light came on. The idle is still high and I was told by Inland Rovers, Riverside CA. that it is an adaptive function and that it has to be reset by the diagnostic system. The one I used didn't have that capability. Not a big deal at this point.

I have a feeling that the exhaust valve in Cyl #5 is sticking. Since it seems to be a big problem. Has anyone ever done a valve job on their Rover? I messed around with VW Bugs for a time and figure its the same theory. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the reply Anthony.

if you really think it is a valve issue, have a compression test done FIRST..should be around $50 or so and could save you tons! as for the adaptive process...i dont know much about how the rovers computer works but every damn time i throw a misfire code i have to take mine in and have all the crap the computer did to adjust, reset! apparently the computer is smart enough to adjust, but not smart enough to unadjust (some on who knows more about this, please throw in your 2 cents!) im like you, i had a couple of vw wesfalia campers, but theyre a cinch compared to rovers (and most other cars)
If compression test comes out crappy, here is a GOOD link for valve jobs on rovers
www.robisonservice.com-servicedep-pdfs-car
on this same site they have also how to put everything back together

also, i read somewhere (dont know if i remember correctly) that you can reset computer by disconnecting battery cables and holdin poitive and neg. together for about 5 mins.
cant find where i read that but i plan on trying it next chance, which im sure will be very soon!
hope all this helps
please post results of everything
