A friend just bought a freelander and learned that it had been converted by the previous owner to 2wd. How difficult would this have been, and why would anyone do that? What would be required to return it to 4wd? Thanks.

Peruse the Freelander section here and you'll learn a few things:

1)very few (if any) people here like the Freelander
2)the trucks are an absolute turd
3)the best thing to do with one is roll it into a lake

I hope your friend didn't spend very much on that truck. My advice would be to get out while he can.

The above applies primarily to the Freelander 1.

edit: I just saw that you were in Canada. He may have the diesel version, which is liked in Europe. The observations above apply to the petrol US trucks.

The question is, how was it converted to 2 wheel drive? The quickest way would be to pull a drive shaft.
The non quickest way ould be to get into the transfer case itself.
I'm calling bullshit and the thing is just broken.

People on this bored sucks sometimes. I owned a Freelander for many years and no issues. Your best bet is to log onto landyzone.co.uk for better results
