Coolant reservoir

Looking for a group consensus, I guess. As the reservoir is a perishable item and these engines, or at least my 03 4.6, are sensitive to overheating, do you replace them as preventative measure or wait for a leak. On rockauto they are about $30.

It was the last thing I replaced last year and I believe it was the problem all along after replacing the radiator, hoses, thermostat, and reservoir cap.
After replacing the reservoir I have not experienced any over heating or coolant spill over when engine turned off.

You can go nuts and get an aluminum reservoir, not cheap, but it'll probably outlast you.
If you get the OE style, make sure it isn't made in the PRC. Probably use melted Aqua Fina bottles, plastic grocery bags and whatever else is blowing down the blvd.

Like Sweden said, the genuine reservoir is a genuine piece of shit. Get an aftermarket one from Atlantic British. I can't even count how many vehicles I've worked on that the factory replacement failed twice before I went and got an aftermarket one. Doesn't have to be an aluminum one. Just not a rover one

All the money goes to the PLA. The seller is showing something that won't fit, if that's what he's going to ship.
A Disco V8 tank doesn't have all those extra flanges. Maybe a 200 or 300 TDI, but not the Disco V-8.
So the seller doesn't know the product and has a misleading ad. No Viewing port either, so you can't glance and see the coolant level.

RN sells an aluminum tank with a sight guage, but it's a Proline product. A good aluminum tank is at least 5X the stock price.
Not sure of origin, if that's an issue with you.
Then there's the one from Allisport in the U.K.; Finest British Quality. They can do it when they put their mind to it.

It’s a direct copy of an Allisport part, they don’t give a shit about the V8 mounts either. They work exactly the same.

For $35 (the accepted ebay best offer), I am going to give it a try. I’ll report back on fit. If it doesn’t fit there is no cost to return it. I will test fit it on a parts truck before I install it on my driver.

That's not for a D2. The D2 reservoir needs the two pins underneath and the nozzels as shown below.

So, I bought one of the cheapo knock offs. I am going to give it an A grade so far. Here are some photos of it test fit on my pile of rust parts D1. Perfect fIt! It uses an o ring for the cap seal. I am a little concerned there is no provision for overpressure relief. I also know the thread started in reference to a D2 so I want to be clear this is for a D1.

It does say you can use the OEM cap. Or you can install a pressure relief valve in that cap. I am going to order one myself. If there is an issue with it, at that price I can mod as necessary.

price doubled overnight, all the non-venting designs got pulled from eBay. 🤔
