As of September 2017 I work for our local utility and as so deemed essential. As long as the security on my computer lets me I can work from home. Managers have encouraged everyone to work from home; most have. I work in the Gas Transmission Engnering department. As a Geologist they don’t know what to do with me so I keep myself busy looking for upside in increasing gas storage potential. Wife works for the University, they sent everyone home weeks ago while the kids where on spring break. Needless to say she is working from home. Went to the bank today to keep my house for another month and had to use the drive up teller. I don’t like using them, would rather talk face to face and watch them count the money. I guess this will be the new normal for awhile. Traffic was a noticeably lighter; we don’t have many confirmed cases here....yet. The biggest upside to work from home is I have about an extra hour in my day from not commuting. Down side is it takes twice as long for my computer to do anything. Both of my kids are in college. My daughter is bored out of her mind. My son thinks this social distancing thing is great. He is one we could send to Mars because he can sit in front of a glowing rectangle all day and never go outside. I see myself getting a lot of yard work done over the next week.

Stay safe everyone

Fuck man, you take a check to the bank every month and personally hand them your mortgage payment? What year is it where you live?

Yeah man. Where can I take anything? My wife and kids are in the U.K. My plans to visit in between work stuff are out for obvious reasons. I’d say I’m homeless but living at my parents house in northern VA in the mean time while I see how all this pans out for airlines. Still employed though so that’s cool. Bought the wife a new iPad so I’ve been reading stories to the kids over that to replace in person things.
stay home. Don't travel. Don't spread the disease.

Essential business is essential business. If this has taught me anything it's that some careers are, indeed, essential for our economy. If you must work, work.

I’ve been working for myself out of my home office for 12 years. Was drilling down in Tucson Wednesday, air sampling in Phoenix today, drilling in Phoenix tomorrow. Staying home and peeking through the blinds is not an option. Just have to be smart and follow simple, routine procedures.

In yesterday's paper there was a article concerning essential and non-essential businesses and if employees were being made to work. The governor stated that if you felt you were being forced to work you should have a face to face with your manager. A lawyer pointed out that with Indiana being a right to work state you could expect the outcome of such a meeting to be your termination. So this morning first thing our supervisor addressed it and stated that if you feel you shouldn't be here all you need to do is say so. If you are full-time with vacation you are free to use it. If not you'll have to sign a document and unemployment will be denied. I have around twelve weeks of vacation and if this were November I just might use it, but being in season I'd be fucking the rest of the crew so I guess I'll be working.

yeah, do you need anything, terryjm1?
Appreciate the offer, got things covered for now. FedEx delivered as promised. The gel packs were even still partially frozen. Wife tried to sign for the package, the driver pulled back quickly, “We aren’t doing that, now.”

Spoke to the wife and son last night. As expected, they really want to come home. I will try to keep convincing them to stay there a bit longer.

Stop preaching in this thread. That's not what this thread is for.
Amen. Such an asinine thing to say. The guy just said he's not traveling and bought his wife an iPad so they could talk and read his kids stories. But good thing Scott is here to tell him not to travel! 🙄

Finally, some POSITIVE FUCKING NEWS! Just had a teledoc call with my specialist from Duke University Medical Center. She's saying the current talk is the number of people who are asymptomatic, and/or show mild symptoms and never see the doctor could be STAGGERING! This would in fact, drive the mortality rate down, WAY down. She will be emailing me more as she hears it. This was STRAIGHT from the horses mouth!!!!! For those wondering she's an endocrinologist.

That is really good news. Question though: wouldn't that also mean that more people are asymptomatic carriers that can still transmit? If so, I'm assuming those with high risk factors (elderly, immune compromised, etc) will still need to be vigilant? (Honest question, it's not my area of expertise.)

I was just reading an article that brought up the same point. The thinking was that Germany is testing so many people, that they are detecting all the minor cases that typically go undiagnosed, therefore driving down their motality rate. I get the feeling there are a lot of people walking around with it that don't realize it.

Precisely, you would be called a 'silent carrier' and be very dangerous to the susceptible folks.

A couple of doctors from Stanford have been questioning the methodology and the media hysteria saying the same thing: You can't base the death rate off just the identified cases because it exponentionally skews the rates much higher. The only way to do it is to base it off all cases (and the majority can't be known because people will have it and have no symptoms or low symptoms and not be tested) - however they can perform some educated guesses.

Of course it's not being promoted in the media because that doesn't sell outrage.

"if the number of actual infections is much larger than the number of (identified) cases, then the true fatality rate is much lower as well"

Imagine that. Rational thinking. Of course as soon as I posted this to some friends half of them started bashing it saying no! It's much worse than anyone can ever imagine and everything is horrible.

Of course it follows that if the death rate is not 2-4% but 0.01 or .1 or .2 then does it make sense to shut down the entire planet?

But that's not the point of this thread really and gets into that politics garbage.

Here it is. For some reason on my computer it's behind a paywall but on my mobile it's not: https://www.wsj.com/articles/is-the-coronavirus-as-deadly-as-they-say-11585088464

The death rate is one thing, the other issue is that it seems to be very difficult on the body even if you survive.

This guy is far younger and more healthy than I am. I dont want to risk it.

So yesterday was drive through bank, drive though pharmacy, Curbside grocery pick up and curbside cannabis.

My town also has a drive through liquor store, so im all set

I’m still trying to figure out how you came to that response from what I posted. A guy’s wife and kids are inaccessible to him and I offer to potentially give some aid in some way if the dude needs it. I am staying at a home and not traveling. And this is your response. Thank you for showing me that putting you back on and keeping you on ignore is the best choice even after the politics section is gone.

ignoring him is the best position. it was a bullshit comment coming from a guy who appears to thrive on panic ( and trump )
