Crank Sensor

Started 2004 Disco 2 running barely running, not throwing any codes had the crank sensor replaced and two days later same condition. Land rovers says it's a cracked or warped fry wheel that is causing issues with the crank sensor. Does this make any sense?

Yea I’ve replaced crank sensors for rough running at higher rpm and no start or stalling when hot especially on d2 but on the old gems motors I’ve seen the flexplate become loose, it’s actually riveted together which sounds really dumb I know, and the rivets start to get loose and elongate the holes in the two parts of the disc causing a wobble affect where the crank sensor picks up its signal. I’ve seen it break the end of the sensor off when bad enough. I’ve welded it back on as well with engine and trans still in car, with good success. Just tedious to get it centered up right. I never saw this on the d2 though. Check the end of the sensor and see if the metal tip is broken off from contact with flexplate. May be a good clue but does t sound likely

it was a Rover dealership that has been doing the work so I hope the would put in the Bosch sensor. Got it back and 6 days later did the same thing. Land Rover thru up their hand and now it is at a different shop. the one thing it is sporadic, it will act up and then the next day its start and run fine. All along I have asked to check wiring and ECM but they thought they new better. Well the new shop ran some test on the ECM and found that its not giving the crank sensor the correct voltage.
so after sending 1800 at rover still not fixed.

Not many guys in Land Rover dealershipsthat know these cars, or want to work on anything older than 15 years old. But just wanted to mention that Rover did not throw up hands, only the dipshits you dealt with.

I agree with you about the dealership I am bealing with but what is frustrating when u take it back to "The Land Rover Delear" you would think your in good hands. I just want the "F"in thing fixed and not pay for things that don't don't fix the problem.

Tell shop it’s at to replace the crank sensor with a good one, clean any oil from harness connector (behind driver side head) and make sure it’s not close to exhaust or otherwise shorting out somewhere, check all ground straps, and make sure they installed the heat shield and spacers correctly. If it runs well afterwards and fixed it then take the invoice to dealer and ask for partial reimbursement perhaps? At 20 years old as others said, dealer is no longer best equipped with techs who are trained on these trucks anymore. Same goes at all dealers as vehicles age.

I would check for spark, if you have spark I would check fuel pressure. You won't have fuel pressure if you don't have a crank position sensor signal.
