Have had a bit of bad luck recently :banghead: We just got quite a bit of snow here in the last few hours in Seattle...

Was pulling into the driveway of my condo. It's a slight hill going down to the parking area, and I slid down the hill and smacked into the back of another car. I should have checked to see how slippery it was, but everything seemed fine while driving 5 miles home.

The neighbor was around, and already talked to them. Their Expedition didn't have much damage at all, but my car is in pretty bad shape. I hit right on the drivers side corner on the headlight, so my hood and fender are bent in.

Any advice before calling my insurance? I've never been in any sort of accident or anything like this before. I know the consideration is usually going through insurance or fixing myself.

if the condo hill was not maintained the association may be liable...not sure of the condo laws there but here in IL you would have a claim for sure.

Yeah, pics, pics, pics!!! Hope you took some.

Make sure and tell your insurance company what happened and HOW it happened - ie: your condo's parking ramp was slick and most likely to blame. Your company will sue your condo's insurance company, that's how it works. Your rate will most likely go up no matter who's at fault though.

It's an american way of doing things, but you're paying for it.

come on guys.....

you make the decision to go for a drive, dont check the roads, get in a wreck and want someone else to pay for your retardedness? yes it is probably possible, yes it is the "american way" but have some fucking principals and man up to your own mistakes. you dont have to be a part of that stupid shit.

how old are you and what insurance do you have?

pics of the damage would help us decide how $$$ the repairs could be.

This is why you have insurance. Call them. If anyone is liable they will deal with it.

Once again, he is paying HOA fees that include insurance (for example, a good third of our HOA fees is insurance). If the roads are not maintained properly, I see nothing wrong for hitting the HOA insurance for it.

on top of that it sounded like a design issue to me.

around here places that have a big drop into a small area they will heat the pavement to keep snow or ice from accumulating on it.

go into the city of chicago and most the parking ramps will never have snow on them just for this reason.

if you are out driving and have accident its one thing, if you are on private property that has a responsibility to keep things safe as "community property" or "shared common element" its another whole issue.

Come on guys this is Seattle not Chicago. It rains all the time. It snows hardly ever. When we do get snow in the North West no one is able to deal with it. People drive with chains on with 1 inch of snow on the ground.

I've lived around here all my life and the snow we are having is a lifetime experiance.

No one not anyone would ever have built a driveway with heat.

I'm sorry for the original poster for his damage. Next time stay off the roads if you can't handle it or don't have the proper tires.

Call your insurance company. Then this can be handled proper and you won't have your neighbor knocking on your door for the next 6 months.

You don't have to claim the damage on your car(fix yourself if you can). Let your insurance company handle his truck.

I love the snow but this will make 2 weeks of no income for me. The yard is greatly affected by cold weather.

Merry Christmas

Thanks for the advice fellas. I'm not really looking to blame anyone of the condo association, as I live in a very small building and an increase in our condo insurance premium will come back to me the same way anyways. I take fault for the accident, as I misjudged how slippery the hill could be... stupid mistake on my part, but I guess we live and learn.

Already called my insurance company, and i'll let them deal with everything and pray that my premiums won't go up. I'm hoping that since i'm 29, have never been in an accident, and have no speeding tickets that maybe they won't.

I once totaled an automobile, the insurance company wrote me a check for $9800. My premiums went up $94 a year for two years then back down to normal. Let me think, I give them an extra $184, they give me $9800! Sounds fair to me.

Same here....insurance company cut me a $12k check for a totaled Disco and my premiums went up about $12/month. I've been using the same insurance company for 12 years now and I'm at about break-even with what I've paid them vs what they paid me. There's a reason you pay for insurance...hand everything over to them, be honest, be diligent, and it will get taken care of eventually.
