Going to be adding tie downs to the back of my D1. Anyone have examples of what you have done to address this factory deficiency? I've read online of people using D2 mounts, but no images or descriptions of how they attached them where they drilled. Any images would be helpful as well as your opinion on how the setup has worked for you.

The very best tiedown locations are seat belt bolts right behind the rear seats.
There are also two threaded holes under the carpet in cargo area that are perfectly suited for tiedowns.

Given the location of the fuel tank, the "safe" drilling locations are within a couple of inches from the rear door frame. You really need to lay down and look up.

I've done two things to add lashing points to the interior of my D1. First, I bolted in a pair of D-ring lashing points to the cargo space floor just inboard of the storage cubbies. I drilled through the floor (after checking what was underneath) and backed the hardware with big fender washers to spread out the force and rubber washers to keep out moisture. Each D-ring has two bolts and two washers.

Second, when I remove the rear seats for extra cargo capacity, I occasionally use the seat mounting holes for single-bolt D-ring lash points.

I don't treat either of these approaches as being heavy duty. Their purpose is to keep stuff still and quiet. This system is not intended to secure cases of tools and spares in a rollover.

Was not aware of those threaded holes... They must be on either side of the main trunk floor, correct?

hey Peter,

Pulled the plastic inserts out of the four holes you mentioned. Two directly behind the rear seat and two closer to the rear cargo door. However, I cannot find a bolt which matches the thread of the holes. It is just slightly too large to be M12x1. or M10x1.50, bolt threads barely catch and just slide through. M12x1.50 is too large and will not fit. Tried a SAE bolt or two with no avail. The D2 uses M8 bolts which are too small. Do you (or anyone else) know the thread?

That's pretty cool idea. How far did you run them. Not familiar with D2, do they run under the rear seats.

I had an Ironman 4x4 double drawer bolted to the rear cargo area.
bolted the l track to the top. Used the eye style hold downs.
I don’t have any pictures.
