All,

Anyone come up with a decent front recovery point for a D1? What did the camel trophy trucks use? I dont have an aftermarket front bumper to use so that's not an option currently.

There should be a bracket with a loop bolted to one of the frame rails.

camel trucks used dixon bate tow jaws half bolted through the front bumper and the other half bolted to a winch tray. Its main function is for the tow bar and not really a recovery point for a winch or rope

possibly Jate rings on the front frame...replace the tow rings.

I've considered that option, but then when I try to envision it the mounting points for the JATE rings would be so far from the front of the truck that any recovery strap/winch cable would likely end up coming into contact with the air dam while under tension. It just looks like it would invite other forms of damage. I've used the stock recovery point on numerous occasions successfully, but it wasn't like I was axle-deep in clay. I could mitigate this by removing the air dam, but I drive a LSE and it would look weirdly off kilter without it.

Jate rings, Terrafirma TFJRP2, and others all attach at the same point. The bumper just isn't strong enough to host a recovery point. However, I have seen some guys fabricate some recovery points that extend through an opening cut in the bumper.

A front end 2” receiver has been the ticket for me. Bolt it to the frame rails, and you’re good to go. Plus, your recovery point can serve other purposes as well.

if you use the Jate rings you should use an equalizing strap between the 2 rings. There are no stock recovery points in the front of the DI. You are probably hooking on to the "tow" rings which is not safe at to use as a recovery point. I know it may have worked in the past for you but you are seriously putting someone or your rig at risk. It comes down to recovering your rig or damaging the plastic air dam...I say take that crap off. I know a bunch of people that have removed the air dam and it looks pretty clean and better approach angle. Like Peter said, pick you poison. Good luck!
Oh, and one last thing, if you go the Jate ring route don't cheap out on the crappy ones! Could make the difference between losing your rig just to save $40.

Well which ones ARENT the cheap crappy ones? Like Peter said there are several variations on Ebay and the proline ones carried by rovers north. Which ones are "the good ones"

I don't use the tow rings as a recovery point. I said I had considered using JATE rings. I have a factory brush guard that bolts to the frame and the time I needed a forward recovery I equalized the two points on that. Having been a mountaineering guide for a few years I'm intimately familiar with the physics, geometry, and dynamics of anchors, as my life literally depended on it.
