D1 Headlight retrofit

I think a few of us might have seen pics of this D1 that was sold on BAT. Does anyone know how the previous owner retrofitted the lights? Curious about the following:

1) Would retrofitting these headlights affect yearly inspections? (finally got mine to pass)
2) Is this a big undertaking or relatively easily
3) is there a way to have high and low beams via this setup?

Thanks!

Why would you ever do that? D1 headlights are by a huge margin better than 7" round units, with the same bulbs. If you want a slightly different look, use D2 headlights.

Yes. Early D2 headlamps have the outer rim blacked out and round reflectors at the center, which is essentially what this bonehead above achieved, but with an inferior hack.

Gotcha, thanks for keeping me in line ha! I had already ordered the D2 "eyeballs", then thought again about this pic. Can't help liking how that looks but will stick wit the D2 upgrade.

Use the D2 lights, upgrade the wiring harness and use 100w bulbs.
Should achieve a better light output with minimal modifications.

The round headlights aren't too hard to do, you need to fabricate the mounts then cut up an RRC grill and it will work as the surrounds.
I would expect it to pass inspections (but cant verify that). You do have the option to use jeep lights, so you can get fancy with some led rings (and we will all probably ridicule you).

I promise I'll stay away from the pink and purple halos haha. Great call re wiring harness and 100w bulbs. Do I just use the 99-02 D2 wiring harness?

No, you make your own. Not that big of a deal - I can make a write-up with part #s and sources if needed.
That would be amazing, but only if you think it would be helpful to other people too. I sometimes can't tell if my own headlights are on or not in the dark. Hopefully this, and the new D2 "eyeballs" will help.

I am not sure if it would be helpful or not - but, even if I consider myself pretty well educated in all matters electrical, it takes me some time to come up with all the parts and wire everything up. And even then things won't necessarily work on the first try.
I'll try to get to it.

Real Rovers have round headlights!! Lol!!
Yeah... I am not installing any rectangular headlights in my Classics. But I am very acutely aware of how much worse the 6024s are than D1/D2/... headlights.
Now that my Classic is down and I am driving my other Classic with the factory headlights, I barely know if my headlights are on. I can install LED bulbs temporarily, but they seem to be brighter without effectively illuminating stuff. And 6500k brightness temperature is annoying as hell.

Isn’t that the truth on stock RRC headlights! I have Euro lights and even with a decent bulb the output is pitiful. The Hella driving lights though make up for it on back roads.

On a RRC the IPF, or Hella housings which allow you to use any 9003 bulb = awesome. If you don't care to look a bit more modern the Trucklite LED or JW Speaker 7inch housings put out a great beam.
