Hey all, I'm wondering if i got an oil pressure switch that is bad. I recently replaced a badly leaking one (was leaking through the switch) with one from Atlantic British:

http://www.roverparts.com/Parts/STC4104

The leaking stopped but now when the truck warms up and i come to a stop, my oil light flickers and then stays on. I initially thought i was low on oil so i checked the oil level and it's spot on for being full at the top of the dip stick. The light only comes on when coming to a stop..as soon as i take my foot off the brake and begin to accelerate, the light goes off and stays off until i come to a stop again.

Is this a defective switch or am i looking at troubleshooting something else now?

could be either or both.....I would hook up a gauge to it to monitor it for awhile that way.....could be a pump ready to quit, or a blocked pickup screen in the oil pan...

Sounds normal to me. How many miles are on it? These trucks are known for having low pressure at idle later in life. Mine started doing it about 4 years ago. I replaced the switch and nothing changed. Running 15/45 oil helped for a year or so. I eventually installed an oil pressure gauge and learned to live with it. Or you could replace the oil pump and probably the bearings.

I think i'll try replacing the switch first since it's pretty cheap and less intrusive. What are the signs of the oil pump going out? Strange noises or do they just die out of the blue?

Is this pretty common to happen as you say "later in life"? I tried searching through several forums and haven't seen that many posts about this problem. Where did you mount the oil pressure gauge? What is the "correct" pressure i should be looking at as mine is a '99 d1.

I have not searched on it since my oil light started comming on. Which was around 2009-2010 and there were a number of threads on it on this site at that time. So far the engine is still running and the oil pump has not gone bad yet. It does have a good bit of valve knock at start up now though. So I have a spare engine ready to go in this summer.

For the oil pressure gauge I used a oil filter sandwich adaptor. I don't know what normal is but when hot mine site at around 5psi at idle and ~25psi at anything above 1200 rpm.

I replaced my 98's with the auto zone oil pressure switch (my original was leaking). Zero issues and I liked the quality of it vs the AB ones I've bought in the past. Swap it out (quick n simple) and go from there. I wouldn't immediately jump to conclusions.

Also you could check the OEM butt connector, it could be loose, or the crimp could be loose/broken from age.

Yuck. IIRC the RAVE says spec is above 12psi hot idle and above 35 psi @ 1800

Ok, i haven't replaced the switch yet, but just driving around today, i noticed that the light only comes on when the RPM's drop below 1300-1400 - which is when i am coming to a stop and it also just stays on at idle - around 700 RPM...Would this be indicative of a defective switch?

Could be. That's kind of how mine acted. I'm sorry to say I even replaced the oil pump gears and pulled a bearing or two to see if the engine was worn out before I realized that my new switch was bad. I've learned my lesson to do the simple diagnostic stuff like actually measuring oil pressure before replacing parts.

My 07 H3 with the 3.7L I5 acted stupid when you'd slow down and the front end would nose dive slightly. Oil light would come one then when you took off or leveled out it would go out. Replaced the oil switch which was internally leaking thru the electrical connection, and boom issue went away. On my 04 Grand Cherokee with a 4.7L V8 the light wouldn't go off after you started it (happened 2 days after I bought it....) Noticed the engine never knocked so I replaced it. Found it cracked at the base but not leaking. After that no more idiot light.

I'm going to buy a oil pressure tester...there are two kits and they have different thread adapters. Anyone know the thread that the oil pressure switch has on it so i can make sure i order the right kit?

Thanks!
