After swapping out the battery my radio code is not working. It's a code I've used a dozen times before, so I'm stumped. Any ideas?

Sometimes those old radios would just take a shit like that. But first try leaving the radio on for about an hour. It might even be 90 min. If you have a battery charger that will put out about 10 amps leave that on it with the key on. Or leave the truck running, your call. I've also had them lock up like your describing and swapped out the radio then have the other radio take it's code after sitting around for a day.

Not enough info in your post to know if this is what happened, but if you enter an incorrect code thrice in succession the stereo goes into a lockout mode. I had this happen to me a couple times and I ended up doing as Stew advised, leaving the radio on for 30 or 60 minutes (forget how long) while driving. After enough time elapses you can re-enter the code. Start with that since it's an easy option to eliminate. If you have the owner's manual it might contain an explanation in the stereo section.

Stew: Thanks for the suggestion. I drove for over an hour and it still didn't work.

Tugela: Thanks for the response. I know how to enter the code and as mentioned in the OP I've used it at least a dozen times before (over the past 10 years). I've never had a problem with it before. I just used it last fall when I reassembled my dash after pulling it apart for some fixes and it worked with no problem.

Suddenly it just no longer works. It just sits there with the CODE displayed on the LED and beeps after I enter the 5th digit. So I guess my radio is broken and I need to replace it?

I just went through this.

I had pulled the negative battery cable to swap the voltage regulator on the alternator.

It took 90 mins of continuous running before the radio would accept the code. Super frustrating but that is a Rover for ya.

I suspect you could just leave it with the key in position 2 for 90 minutes while you watch Sportscenter or something. I don’t think the engine needs to be running.
