under normal conditions.....with the key in the second "on "position...the fuel pump will run for a few seconds...to pressurize the fuel rail, when the key is turned to the start position and the engine is turning over...the the ckps tells the ecu what position the crank is in to dish out spark to the proper plug(s) at the right time. the ecu shouldnt kill the fuel untill it sees that the engine is turning over with no spark.....so as to prevent flooding the motor with unburnt fuel.
dead ckps.....no spark
dying ckps.....usually spark till the engine warms up, then no spark till it cools off some

funky wiring to the ckps can cause hell also....it can be burnt and brittle and/or stripped of insulation...shorting out...etc
