D1 Tires

Not sure how much lift you’ll have but I’ve always run the 255/85 and they clear and tuck perfectly.. But not much room to spare!View attachment 59969View attachment 59970View attachment 59971

255/85 aren’t going to fit without cutting on a D1 or RRC. Maybe with longer bump stops but the size of the lift does not matter.
It might work around town but I had to trim the inner wells both front and rear on my 89RRc with 255 bfgs.

Actually I didn’t cut anything on my rrc for the 255/85’s. Cutting wasn’t something I was willing to do. It stuffs very well. And the lift can make a difference. A taller lift means the axle is further away when it rotates/articulates so a greater angle of wheel when it stuffs, allowing for a wider tire or offset. An it’s been well tested on the trails.

Well I stand corrected. Are those the bfg mt km3 or 2? I have a set for my new hybrid build and I may have to try them on my D1. The old first gen BFG MT would not fit. That said I’m not following how the lift spring makes a difference as the axle articulates on the trailing arm and a frame joint. I can’t see how a taller spring would change that unless maybe the compressed length is longer so it doesn’t stuff as much. What springs are you running. Thanks for the heads up. Beautiful truck too!

Thank you! Those are km2’s and I’m running Rovertym 3” progressive springs. it would definitely be easier to show vs explain! Especially with these wheels with a wider offset, they still stuff without hurting any sheet metal.

That is awesome to know. I had already gotten a set of D2 flares for the D1 to make a set of 255s fit down the road but I definitely would rather not cut the D1 since it’s all painted and shiny. I was already planning 1” spacers on the OME HD springs or a set of 3” springs. Since they are much taller than the 235s I have now. Been sitting on a 1.4 t box for some time too to go with it. Thanks so much. Those new wheels really set it off and it looks so sweet

I’m not sure if the D1 fenders/wells are cut exactly like the rrc, but it’s everything together that makes it all work. Rear links spaced right because the axle moves back on compression, bump stops that allow for maximum tuck and also max droop during articulation. Shocks with travel that match both. Etc

And I’m sure someone aro you has 255’s that you can test fit and cycle the suspension when your lift is done. I didn’t just get lucky that my stuff fits, I did the math and homework before hand.

D2 wheel arches don't fit D1s very well. I've yet to see any outer wheel arch mod to a D1 that looks right.
I've seen the D2 flares on a D1 and they look good. Mickey has a set, Flyfish would probably agree they look good. A lot of mods come down to install and time taken to do it right. I've seen some camel cuts that look like ass, and others that look factory.

Yep, I forgot he did. It’s not a RRC but it does look good.

Makes sense to me now about spacing the links back and longer bump stops. If I can get away without cutting even better. I don’t hate the D2 flares but I prefer none on a disco especially with the natos or steel spares offset (which it has now). I have a new set of 255/85 km3 on natos on a hybrid in building so I could test with those. Thanks so much

You can stuff quite a bit without cutting a ton from the wheel arch. Obviously my rear camel cut is pretty severe, but the front camel cut is pretty mild. Mind you, none of the outer arch, the part that you would normally cut for D2 or Flexi flares, has been cut. Those are 315/75/16 KM2's on stock alloy wheels with 50mm spacers.

What’s the backspace on the wheels you’re gonna use?
The NATO/wolf or the steel spares from a D1. I think they are both stock offset.
Those 35s look mean though. Here’s a pic of her now with the 235 cooper mt. My sons first car. 96 se7 5spd. Little father son project.

235/85 without wheel arch extensions, 265/75 with them.

Going to add another tire to the list. BFG KM3. It's as good on road as AT were a few years ago.
