There is also an AB fix that worked for me. I had a spare ecu to plug in, I did it with the wires hanging out and everything worked fine. By the time I got it all back together, the rear windows stopped working again. I did this bypass and they work all the time now. Same as posted above. You do not have to buy the wire from them...

Quick post for the inevitable future-people who have run into this problem; I took it all apart and was about to rip out and resolder the window ECU. I'm lucky I jiggled the connection while hitting the down button before pulling it all. In my case it was just shitty 20 year old plastic harness to board connections. Pulled it out, dialectric grease and firmly seated it back and works like new again. Knock on wood.

I started this post years ago. On this particular D1 the windows only occasionally decided to not work. So, I put it on the back burner. Well, a couple weeks ago they stopped working and didn’t come back. So. I retrieved a spare ECU on hand, unknowing if it works, and plugged it into the harness. It didn’t work either. So, I opened it up and found there was a previous attempted re-solder. I melted the solder on the previous repair and it now works again. I then pulled the original one out and found the bad spot and added a little solder to that one. Now. they both work.

Like many others, I didn’t remove it with the casing. I pulled the circuit board out.

If you haven’t done this job, it really is not difficult.
