D2 Half Frame replacement job

I’ve shortened a couple D1 frames for hybrid builds. The general consensus is to z cut it and plate the cuts with similar thickness steel using rounded edges (i used egg shaped plates) for crack resistance. At least that has worked well for me.

Are disco frames not high strength steel?

When I was looking into repairing my GX470 frame, all "professional" information stated that welding on high strength steel is a No-No because the heat changes the characteristics of the metal.

Is that just paranoia?

Afaik, this 1/2 frame joins to the existing frame with a 6" sleeve.

I have no idea but I have cut and welded a RRC frame and now a D1 frame to build series hybrids. The RRC frame withstood a lot of heavy wheeling and recovery and not one issue. Ive welded crossmembers/outriggers/etc on as well to both and they are there to stay. If you plate it I wouldn't worry about it one bit. Just try to use a similar thickness of metal for your plates. The RRC I cut straight and plated with thicker steel as I didn't know any better and it wasn't an issue. Obviously precise measurements are needed to be sure it is square. You are correct that welding can weaken steel though which is why a vertical cut plate with a vertical weld (which I used on the RRC frame) is not ideal and rounded corners are better.

I'd like to bump this up to see if there are any updates. I just picked up another D2 that has a very rough rear quarter of the frame. I rest of the truck is super clean and low mileage. I'm thinking about doing the rear quarter replacement from Rovers North.

In stock and almost $300 cheaper. Even coming from England you'll save money.
