Just did my rear breaks and my drivers side rear hub is leaking a bit. When I had a front hub put on the shop told me I needed a new rear hub. is there an o ring on the axle that can be replaced. I searched and am going to check the breather tube. The hub is barly seeping but looks like it has been for a while.

03 D2

I really don't see how the hub could seal the axle, I think he was trying to take me for 500 bucks plus install.

Going to check my rave also.

Thanks,

Eric

Yeah there is a big O ring on the rears. Pull the caliper, the rotor and remove the four bolts holding the hub and half shaft in place. It is mated up between the axle and hub. Most times they stay in place on the axle side.

Sorry I couldn't meet up with you last weekend. We were overwhelmed with boxes moving back in our home.

Cheers,

Mike

Thanks we'll be there again. My directions were a bit long but its easy to find once you get in there.

So do I pull the hub all the way off and I'll see it, is this a rover part or just a big o-ring.

if it is leaking at the bottom of where the hub bolt up it is the o-ring, if it is leaking from behind the wheel spindle, it is the bearing seal... new hub required...

Looks like its behind the hub, some fluid on the brake shield nothing on inside of wheel. I could see the fluid by looking thru the caliper where the hub bolts to the to the axel.

Just need to know what o rings to get and how many.

The hub and axle will come out together. You can pull it out a couple inches to inspect but if you are going that far just pull it all the way out. Don't mess with the stake nut. The only reason to remove it is if you are changing axle shafts or hubs. If this is the case you must brake the stake nut loose prior to removing the four bolts that hold it all together with the axle housing. I don't remember the exact size of the O ring but they are cheap at the dealership or anyhere else that sells rover parts.

edit: one O ring per side.

If you don't want to remove the stake nut, you can also remove the brake line and abs sensor cable and pull out the whole hub with shaft to put the o-ring on... you will have to bleed your brakes after, but easier than tackling that stake nut if you don't have the big tools.

My problem is in my garage is that I don't have enough room to pull the axle out, and my complex frowns on working on your car in the parking lot. I've got air tools now so I should be able to pull the hub and go at it that way.

Thanks,

Eric

You don't have to remove the brake line! You just remove the caliper and hang it to your coil spring with a zip tie.

oh yeah, you are correct sir...

Mastercamper, the drivers side unfortunately is the long side. Don't worry about your complex, just yank that thing out, sans caliper, chuck that o-ring on and slide it back in. if you have a hard time getting the hub free then just unscrew the bolts half way out and hammer on them a bit to pop the hub out. oh yeah, expect some diff-oil spillage.

I just went through this BS during last winter :ack:.
