Hey fellow rovers ,

My kid bought a 1999 discovery sd and he was wondering why it shacks as he drove it , he brought to my house and I found that he was missing half of the steering components! I found all of them expect the damper mounting bracket on the differential!
If anyone knows where I can get one or if someone can give me the measurements so I can fabricate one , it would be greatly appreciated

Can't help you with the measurement but unless you have a ham radio license, the spot for Callsign should be empty. Chris was pretty specific about that.

Can we all take a moment and recognize that this guy said "the damper bracket on the differential".....WTF? hahahaha

Unless he is talking about that big steel harmonic damper....

Yeah, that. And the stock location for the steering damper is on that bracket......on the differential. 😉

If the rover shakes when he drives it then you need to find the problem and fix it. the damper wont fix that. and if the rover is fixed properly the damper isn't really needed. look up death wobble and start tracking down the real issues.
Look at your panhard bushings, TRE's, and swivel ball preload.

Check Radius Arm Bushings and tie-rod ends. The steering damper keeps your hand from being broken when you hit a big rock on the trail. A new steering damper might mask DW, but it does not fix it

If it still shakes after a bump, then rebuild the swivel balls, not just shim. ABS uses torque-wrench, non-ABS you can use a spring-scale.

Actually this discovery sd is missing a ton of parts and I'm just going by what the mechanic at alantic British is giving me !
I've never owned a land rover brand vehicle before so I'm punting , give me a mopar,Chevy or Ford and I'm good!

You'd have a harder time finding good parts, honestly. I can get anything for my DII, XJS (except rain curtains/vapor barriers), or G20T in two days.

Everything I try to order for a domestic vehicle is a fucking nightmare. Dealing with that again today, actually.

Cheers,

Kennith

The nearest shop familiar with Discos should do a safety check anyway. Then you'll know what to do.
