So this morning I head out early to run some errands, take my dog to the vet for an ear infection, and just to cruise around some county roads since i had nothing better to do.

I get on Lee County CR83 (alabama for those who dont know) in hopes to see something cool. I cruised this short dirt road a few times last year, found dozens of deer carcasses (from hunting season), a few illegal trash dumps, and even a Sound of Music original vinyl record. Well this year, i stopped at the same trash dump and saw something that really made me sad.

A dead female beagle with a red collar on. The dog had 2 options to get into that state of condition 1. it became emaciated after becoming lost or running away or 2. was dumped by its piece of shit owners after not being fed. I'm assuming animal neglect/cruelty because the fact that this dog was tossed in a spot where lots of trash, furniture, tires, and dead animals (like deer, hogs).

I called animal control to report it in case it was neglect or a reported missing pet. They were closed, so i talked to a dispatcher and an Auburn Police Dept Officer came out to meet me within about 3 minutes.

Cop gets out of his car in his clean black uniform and shiny black boots. I show him the dog. I ask him if he wants to look for ID tags and if he has rubber gloves in his cruiser. He says "um can you do it? do you have gloves?". I was like yeah i got gloves, fine i'll do it...then this guy looks at his boots which got a bit of clay on it and looks like the end of the world just happened. while i'm putting on the gloves (FROM MY ROVER) and flipping this poor dead dog over in sandals now ankle deep in a muddy decomposing mess.

poor dog had no tags, therefore there was nothing i could do or the AUPD could do. Which is what i expected if there wasn't tags. kind of a let down that there wasnt tags, but we did all we could for the situation. There was also absolutely no trama to indicate a car accident, nor were there any ruts from where a car woulda swerved or braked hard to avoid hitting a dog. so neglect or just an innocent missing dog starving to death were the only options

basically:
1. Auburn's police dept is pretty pathetic. I mean i understand there wasn't anything they could do in the situation, which isnt a big deal...however, the fact that this cop was repulsed by a dead dog and didn't want to get his boots wet was sad. Looks like someone has never dealt with a homocide or was a city slicker growing up. I've dealt with AUPD several times and anytime I have needed assistance or reported something, they have been well below par. The only thing they can do properly is bust parties, write tickets, and report traffic accidents. LCSO is x99999999999 better, and I really realize how good the cops do their jobs back home (Even though they can get on our cases sometimes).

2. People need to learn how to take care of their pets and be responsible pet owners. don't get a dog if you can't afford to feed it or take it to a vet. don't get a dog if you can't keep it under control or keep it from getting lost. don't get a dog if you're on welfare, have a bunch of kids, live in a trailer, and do crack as your profession. don't neglect dogs. If you dog dies from something you couldn't avoid at least have the decency to bury the poor thing.

3. If this truly wasn't animal neglect and just an unfortunate series of events like a dog getting lost, then I really feel bad for the pet owner.

4. I'm putting a bulletin on facebook with the dogs description in case someone really did lose a dog. I also put a similar notice on Craigslist.

not a fun morning. Also while I was posting a listing on craigslist and searching "LOST PET", i found a disturbing link of some assholes fishing for sharks using kittens.....pretty fucked up.

private message me if you're in alabama and you know the owner...odds are it'll never happen, but its worth a shot.

that's pretty lame man. that officer sounds like he's out of that cop spoof show, reno 911 or something.

i wont ever go off on the animal cruelty thing cause it's probably the truth. dogs have been known to follow scents for some pretty crazy distances. maybe the owner just dropped it off in an already weakened state.

i'd trust a dog's sense of smell over a person's compassion any day.

I would have been repulsed too.. I wouldn't touch a decaying dog myself, and really that wasn't the cops job either in my opinion. That cop could have been doing something else besides wasting time on a dead rotting dog corpse.

umm the dog was maybe dead 24-48 hours. you're gonna run into dead bodies of some kind if you are into law enforcement. i think that this officer was pretty lame in general. its not like i enjoyed playing with the dog's body either. animal neglect, abuse, cruelty are real crimes, and they are part of a cops job just as much as anything else if there isn't an agency that covers such crimes like the ASPCA in that area. i

and here is the link to one of the most fucked up videos i've ever seen....shark fishing with kittens.

i took all of 12 minutes of this guys time today. sure, catching a drug dealer would be a better use of this guys time, but considering this guy didn't even want to get his boots muddy today, i have a hard time believing he would do a good job at some serious police work.

and once again, i attempted to get ahold of animal services first, its their job to deal with cases like this. but since animal services was closed, that duty falls on the police because it was possible animal neglect.

i dont know how good the drug dealer chases are at 9:30am either.

no offense dude but that dog was dead. wtf did you think this cop was going to do? lay out a CSI crime scene investigation? in virginia, and i suppose in bama too, the hunters use these dogs to chase deer and sometimes they dont make it back to the truck and starve to death out in the woods. happens here every day. while i find it nice that you took the time to check for tags etc, your condemnation of this cop is a little misplaced. i mean the dog was in the dump right? someone at least took the time to throw the carcass away and not leave it rotting in the road or whatever. you want to help? go find a dog who is alive and give him a bone. but as they say, let sleeping [or dead] dogs lie. if i was that cop i would have arrested you just for wasting my fucking time.

please cuff me for trying to help out. i know what happens with hunting dogs. I see loose ones every day, but a beagle isn't normally what you see running wild with the strays, especially not with a collar on. the dog starved to death, either caused by humans or because it got lost. If it was caused by humans and there was a tag on that collar, it woulda been worth it for the cop to just pay a visit to the owner to make sure more dogs weren't also in an emaciated state.

the only reason a cop came out to the spot was because animal services was closed on saturdays. i didn't see a need for a police officer, i saw a need for an animal services to take a look.

I've seen dozens of dead dogs all over Lee county, this is the first one I've seen in this bad of shape and with a collar. It was obviously not dead because of a car like most of the ones I have seen. So when I saw something that didn't fit, i acted as I thought was appropriate.

ok sorry, i thought this was a hunting dog. you should've just checked for tags yourself then called animal services if you found one. no sense calling the cops. they dont care about this shite. ask trevor how many stops he makes for dead dogs.

on the topic of hunting dogs getting loose...last night I was cruising out to tuskegee national forest catching some critters in one of the swamps at night. On the way back there was a dead deer that had gotten hit the previous day, well when i flashed my high-beams i noticed 4 large-breed dogs eating at it like a pack of wolves. They are a pack i've seen a few times in the area. They look to be 2nd generation muts, but it was obvious they all had a Half-lab retriever part to them and possibly a hound mix. it was pretty sweet, like seeing an urban wolf pack lol

I used to live down off Hwy 80 years ago and there are more than just packs of dogs. There is, well at least was, a substantial coyote population in and round the forest. Any given night we could hear them all along the ridge behind our property. Have you found the old WPA damn on the northwest side of the forest?

I'd agree with that.
However, knowing a very little about beagles, I'd be also inclined to think that this one ran away.
