Good Morning All, I think I'm experiencing Maybe a front cv joint failing on my 98 D1. Are there any tell tale symptoms or quick drivability test I can perform to confirm or not confirm a CV failure. I get a little bit of a thump or deep pop sometimes when accelerating from a stop making a right hand turn. I'm also feeling some vibration in the steering wheel that feels more like a hum or a gear that's dry. Whatever the vibration may be, it feels that it's mostly radiating through the steering wheel. When driving I can place my hand on the gear selector and there is zero vibrations like there was when I had driveshaft problems. I do have an ATB diff in the front, when the truck is locked up on dry pavement, a tight turn does feel notchy which I think is to be expected and I only noticed that when I accidentally left it locked in high. I know this is all sort of vague but any insight on some simple checks to rule out the big stuff would be appreciated. Thanks.

Follow up to my question lol, I checked the diff fluid in the front, wayyy over full. Checked the swivel housings, very low, empty almost. Leaked into the axlehousing. Now I know why it’s a bad idea to use gear lube in the housings. Corrected the diff fluid level and pumped the housings with cv grease. No more more humming in the steering wheel. Still chasing some vibrations but I’ve tracked it down to warped rotors and incorrect seating of the wheels because of junk terrafirma wheel spacers. The rotors I’ll resurface but the spacers.. those gotta go.

What I found is that the spacer clocks the wheel so it doesn’t clear the axle flange bolts. The corner of the bolts just digs into the rim until the wheel is tight.

I run gear oil in my Swivels.. Yup they leak.. Yup I have to top them off every oil change or year.. BUT I cross rivers and dip into the water.. OLD LR guy told me when I got this if you ever go into water, run oil.. As the LR grease will hold the water in there during fluid changes.. YMMV...

If it ain't leaking, it is out of fluids! -Rover

Well the problem with mine is that it’s leaking past the inner seals and over filling my diff by one quart. I pumped 370g of polymar water resistant green grease in each side. I have the early hubs with the fill level hole, the thread pitch is the same as the hose on my grease gun. Was easy to pump each side. My front end is quiet now.
