I've got the bug for a Disco 1 or 2 I'm currently looking at a 98 148k guy says the HG's have been done but not by who. Looking at an 04 112k hasn't had any engine work.
My question is if you own a Disco is there no getting around your gonna have to do a HG every 60k miles or so? I'm currently tinkering with BMW's so the constant leaks and engine repairs is not too scary for me. Looking thru all the forums and trying to do my research has my head spinning, I had a dream i had to replace my head gasket last night.
Thoughts?

if you ever overheat you’re in for a gasket at some point, might be 5 miles down the road or 15k. some people reach 200k on the original set

It's not a question of if. The 2004 model years have more issues than the D1 blocks, but for some reason people seem to love them. If you want a sense of what you're in for, check out this write-up.
I’d actually ran across and read that write up good info, saved it in my Rover folder.
I’ve actually been looking at some that already have blown hg’s and people are just trying to get them out of their driveway.

my '96 D1 had 240,000 miles on the engine on it when i sold it. it was still on the original HGs.

both my '04 D2s have had the HGs done. one at 160,000 miles and the other at 140,000 miles.

neither was overheated when i owned them. with the D2s i just assume that HGs are part of the maintenance.

i also have an '01 with the 4.0 at 180,000 miles that to my knowledge is still on the original HGs.

as of right now I'm aware of the rear windows not working the drivers side ac blend knob is stuck, after market stereo is not installed correctly. its a good looking 98 i checked all the usual rust spots thanks to this site all are clean. I just don't want to jump into something and boom rebuild. The guys price is kinda high right now anyways so the more he keeps hope alive the more i find other better priced options.

Doesn’t sound too bad yet there are examples out there where everything works. Besides rust, good maintenance records is key. However as they age and get used things will need fixed. I’m facing something needing messed with on the emergency brake. Brake releases yet the dash light stays on.
If you can, take your time. Mine took more than a year to source mostly because of the color and condition criteria.

check the switch on the parking brake. they get gummed up and wont pop free and un ground.
