Hi All - Just wanted to share in case this helps anyone. I found old threads on the topic here and on other forums, but the speakers referenced were typically hard to find or so old they are not sold anymore.

I just replaced my rear subwoofers in my D1. They basically fell apart and sounded like crap. I am not an audiophile but I do like my car stereo to sound decent and at least work.

If anyone is thinking about doing this, these speakers actually worked really well for $20 shipped from amazon for both of them.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0071HY42K/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They are Pyle PLPW6D.

As far as installation went, the "hole" that surrounded the old speakers where they recess into the doors was not open enough as the magnets on the new speakers are larger so I used a cutting wheel and cut off a bit of the door panel and simply pounded the opening wider where necessary with a hammer. I just relocated the amp to the side inside the door I had to use some speaker wire to extend the exiting wiring.

Enjoy!

I've got the yellow Pyle's in my Disco 2. They were cheap and sound way better than the stock subs.
As long as you go 6.5" round and 3" depth or less, any subwoofer will fit with a little modification to the panel with a hammer as mentioned previously.

I cut a lot from the rear door and recessed the stock subs behind my aluminum panel.

When I purchased my Disco had a 10" polk subwoofer in a big box in the rear. Sounded great but took up 1/4 of the floor. I built a wooden frame to suspend the speaker in the side pocket (the plastic is too thin to hold up anything, so behind the plastic is 3/4" plywood). The wiring, amplifier, and a bunch of that speaker insulation material fill up the box. Sounds 80% as good as the solid wooden box and keeps the speaker out of the way. I need to put a grille over it before I puncture it.

By the way the bottle opener in the panel 2 posts up made my day. A man with priorities.
