We are seriously considering buying a diesel disco and want to find out some info from someone who has experience with them. Looking at the DEF requirement, namely how much of a pain in the ass is it to keep it topped up, and can you fill it yourself or do you have to take it to the dealer to get it done? I see that you can buy 1/2 gallon bottles, but how big is the DEF tank? Looking at the "average" consumption rate of 2.8L per 1000 miles it seems like you would need to top it up every other time you fill up with diesel.

Anyways, thanks!

You can buy a 2.5 gallon container of DEF at Walmart, Home Depot or any auto parts store for around $12.
It comes with a pouring spout but I usually use a funnel. I fill it up around every other month or just before a long trip.
The filler cap is just inside the left hand fender about halfway along the length of the hood - its easy.
The tank holds more than one full container - not sure but I think its around 4.8 gallons capacity.
They say not to overfill the tank but there is no level indicator - if the warning light comes on you are probably down to under a gallon in the tank so a full 2.5 gallon container won't overfill it.

I put about about 12K miles a year on mine and use about three or four containers of DEF a year.

20 mpg around town, 31 on the highway and almost silent at 70 mph - I'm a big fan of my 2017 D5 with around 25,000 miles on it.

It's too bad they don't offer the commercial variant here. It's a pretty sweet "factory" off-pavement interior setup.

Cheers,

You can get DEF even cheaper at truck stops. They have DEF pumps at the fuel islands, usually priced less per-gallon than diesel fuel. I saw it around $2.70/gal today.
