Hi all, the wifes 1997 S1 Discovery Clutch peadal has just played up. When depressing it initially feels like there nothing there and the goes rock solid and not reaching the end of its travel?
I got it home by starting it in 1st gear, but I could not change to any other while driving.
The vehicle has 67000 miles and has had no problems in this department.
any help or ideas welcome.

thanks

Gary

if the problem is that you can't change gears without grinding.. try holding the clutch down for a few secs then change gears... if it goes in smoothly sounds like clutch spin... on my 96 disco, first 1/2 is nothing, then a bite of force then the tail end feels like nothing... has always been that way

Is the fluid in the clutch master cyl full? first thing to check. if not fill and operate clutch and look for leaks. if its full, well then we got other issues. the fact that you can drive it in first is a slight indication that your clutch disc is probably ok. but doesnt mean that the pressure plate is ok, I have seen pressure plates come apart and jam , not allowing the release to happen. but with only 67k on it my bet is on an hydraulic failure, ie, clutch master, slave cylinder or the line that connects them. after re reading your post, i say fluid leak.
