So my plates expired last day of 5/07. I am moving to another state this week, figure it would be no big deal to just run with expired plates. ( I only drive it once maybe twice a week right now) until I get to new state and then deal with it all then. Well saturday night was one of the nights i drove. Got pulled over, I have Insurance. Cop told me reg. was expired. Told him the story, and he said he was writhing me a ticket, I thought shit, only like half a month expired, but oh well I'll call the court pay the fine, clear this up.

however, when he comes back to my window he tells me he decided to impound the rover until I get it registered, for the fact that I am moving and could just leave town without taking care of it.

At least the tow company said they won't start storage till monday since theres nothing I could do over the weekend. They were cool at least.

Yes I realize I made a mistake, lesson learned, only I didn't expect it would be this big of a deal.:ack:

when i was in my 20's i had just finished restoration work on my car that had been registered non-op for quite a while. took it for a test drive and low and behold, get pulled over and officer calls for a tow truck. my car was hooked up and ready to be towed away when he got a call on the radio telling him to wait a sec. turned out that in CA your tags had to be expired beyond 12 months before they could impound (don't know if that's still applicable today). i drove away in my beloved porsche (with a ticket of course).

$5 trip permits and 30 day temp regs. I drove from PA to AZ on a 3 day trip permit. Much cheaper than a ticket and you can print it out online.

I had a similar incident with the cop pulling me over in my own driveway after I had driven about 100 yards to the neighborhood dumpster to throw out the trash. We live in the country.

The neighbors enjoyed mooning out the windows confirming their long held suspicions about my character.

The cop said my insurance was expired as well but I knew that was bullshit because I pay for my insurance on 6 vehicles in one lump sum and have been with the same company since 1998. The cop enjoyed overhearing my phone conversation with the insurance company who had made the mistake. Still had to get all the paperwork and show it to the court before they dropped the insurance charge but the tag cost me an extra $140 bucks for being cited.

He threatened to have the vehicle towed but since it was early on a Sunday morning and I was on my own property, he didn't push the point. Maybe the large barking dog had something to do with it.

I know it was my fault and there is no excuse but had I been blond and female I think the outcome would have been quite different. Guys in 4x4s get no breaks at all.

LOL, my father was getting his drivers license renewed. Drives to the DMV, waves at the cop in the parking lot and goes in to get his license renewed...

He comes out all pleased with himself at being a good boy. He gets in his car and as he looks back, he sees the cop standing next to his car about ready to tap on the window. The cop informed him his plates were expired. He was given a choice. Go back in and get new plates, or have his car towed from the parking lot of the DMV, and walk back to his office.

He went back in.

What you need to know is that Indiana has a well-deserved reputation for long waits in the DMV. It took him the entire business day to get his drivers license and plates renewed.

also get this....

I have a CCW permit. The dispatch tells the officer that when they run my name.

He says wheres your gun at? I said, I don't have one with me. he says I know you do, wheres it at, I again say, I do not have a gun with me. He says, I ran you, you have a CCW and now I want to know where the gun is. I said again, I am not carrying right now, if you wanna search, have at it but if your reason you believe I have one is because I have a CCW, then your gonna be in some shit, then I asked for a supervisor to come cause the way he was acting. After the supervisor (sergeant) got there, i told him and he said it was because I have a CCW on file, he was scared I had a gun and I was getting a little irate with him, I told the supervisor, "If I never got my CCW, neither one of you would know I may or may not have a gun on me...."

(The officer became nicer after the sergeant showed up)

That's so true, why is it that cops are such dicks to people who follow the rules? Why don't they search EVERYONE for guns? It's just as easy to have a gun on you without a permit! In fact, if you were really TRYING to sneak a gun around, why tell everyone about it with a CCW permit?

Exactly what I tell them everytime they give me shit about it.

They should be less concerned about us as we are "Proper Persons" proven by their background check.

Gangbangers don't get CCW permits.

I once told a cop that I had an FFL in addition to a CCW. Talk about proof of being a proper person.

Colorado has a 30-day grace period. If your tags are printed 05 - 07 (May of 07) then they expire on the last day of May. Grace period extends you through June for renewal. You can be ticketed on 1 July.

Did you think it would be easier to register your vehicle in another state with expired CO tags? Aside from being a dick and towing your car, the cop probably did you a small favor.

All you do is transfer the paperwork and probably pay some "handling" fees and pay for the metal plate itself and you're done. I've never had to double pay. Hopefully that's how it'll work for you. But now ya know.

Nope probably no reimbursement, but what I have done is not get my plates changed over from the place I left until they are expired. I have also been real slow changing my license over to a new location but when I am forced to do one I will do all. Just be quiet about when you moved...

az_max: Is this www.servicearizona.com temp plate good across all the US? That rocks if so.
