Drive shaft blew - tranmission dead!!!!

Hello All

I had my front drive shaft blow out 60 km outside Winnipeg on Friday... More than 2000 km from home. It blew a small football size hole in my tranmission. I had it towed to a Land Rover dealer and they quoted me a repair price. They quoted me $8500.oo for just parts.... I have heard it is hard to find cases for the ZF because the front drive shafts blow and smash holes in them.( really???)

I had it towed to Mr Transmission... they are quoting rebuilding my ZF with a new case.

The good news it that my insurance company said they will be paying to get it fix... I hope they come through.

I got a ride back to Toronto and now waiting for the repairs.

Does anyone make a driveshaft loops for DII?

Busted in Winnipeg,
Brock - DII w/ a huge hole in transmission

If the insurance co is paying, try and get a new tranny. If not, Will Tenary ?sp? on this board can get you a used unit for a good price. Shipping might hurt though. Sorry to hear of this and good luck!

It failed due to lack of maintenance. Using a driveshaft hoop is akin to putting ambulances at the bottom of cliffs instead of building a fence.

Maintain your vehicle and these sorts of things don't happen.

What would cause that? Lack of lube in the u-joints?

The stories I've heard alla ttribute failure of the universals to the proximity to the cat on that side boiling the grease out. Couple that with the inability to add more grease and you have a problem waiting to happen.

Thanks Paul, I didn't know if there were u-joint grease zerks or had a rotor flex. I guess what I was getting at, was how does one properly maintain the front prop shaft?

No zerks, no maintenance. Factory units are sealed and should be replaced or at least have u-joints replaced. Just replaced mine at 56K miles with a GBR rebuilt shaft, now no worries if kept greased. I heard anything over 60K on factory unit and you're on borrowed time. Roto-flex is on rear only.

Brock, were you noticing any driveline vibrations before it blew?

Everyone else, would there usually be driveline vibes before it goes? I'm sure there are plenty of us with stock sealed u-joints wondering how many miles we can get with our lifts before replacing the joints. I've heard people say wait until it starts vibrating, and others say do it right away. $200 or so bucks isn't that much, but if there are usually known signs, it might be worth the wait. If it's truly random....

I had a client who told me his truck made a clicking noise and a block away, BAMMO!

Others tell me they start making noise and it gets worse until they can't turn the stereo up any louder and then, BAMMO!

OK OK OK, mine goes under the wrench tomorrow. NEAPCO U-Joints at 15.88 each. The stereo simply will not cover up the squeak anymore.
I'm wondering if that hole in the tranny was football sized like a football, or football sized like a soccerball???? either way, I don't want to have a similiar experience.

I haven't replaced Rover U-Joints before, but generally it's a pretty straight forward install. I know MG U-Joints are a bear because the yokes are curved and have a taper and won't fit in a vice very well.

Is there anything crazy about Rover U-Joints?
