drop hitch/receiver question

I just "contracted" (via craigslist.org) to haul a 10' Shasta trailer (sleeps 4) from Boston to San Francisco in July (I'm going anyway, and I need the space and a place to sleep!). I'm getting $500, so that makes me happy.

Anyway, I hooked up the trailer the other day, and my hitch is WAY to high (probably about 4-6 inches). I have a 3-ball hitch, the one-piece deal with a 1" shaft for my receiver. I've looked around for a drop-receiver (with a 1" receiver on the lower end), but I haven't found one -- do they make them, or do I need to just buy a drop-hitch and get another ball for it? Thanks!

p.s. I also need to fix the lights, which should be fun...

I have a master lock hitch that is rated at 5000 lbs and is adjustable up to 6" drop.

Got it at walmart.

you should just bite the bullet and get the proper drop hitch for a trip of that magnitude, thats a long way to have a twitchie trailer behind you.

look at it this way.....you still have about $460 bucks left :D

I sure hope your "contract" includes gas....because the economists are saying it could be at $2.50 to $2.75 a gallon by JUNE

I've got the master lock adjustable hitch, too. It's a good system, you can adjust it with the trailer attached using a ratchet. I think it was like $52 @ walmart and a ball was another $7-10

going to bite the bullet

I think you're right, I will get the proper hitch/ball drop-down. As for the gas question...well, the $500 is basically for gas, but I would have spent $400 or so on gas anyway (plus lodging, plus trying to figure out storage), so I'm happy with the deal.

Off to Walmart (or NAPA) today...
