So has no one figured this out? I would love to drop my truck off and come back to a new LS in it, but I would be happy with any engine that gives reliability and more power than my worn out 4.0.
I'm in the same boat right now. I have my D1 powertrain completely stripped at this time and want to repower it. The problem I have found is that the 3 options I am looking at all come in at around the same price L87/8L90, R2.8/TR4050, ACR 4.8 HiTorque/ZF4HP24. All have their advantages an drawbacks for the build, but IMHO I believe they are all solid choices. I have a 1.2 and 1.4 TC, so whichever way I go I'm good there.

I just can't bear the thought of this truck being this engines third home, she is getting a little tired.

Might just have to break out the old D&D 3 sided die and give it a roll

three sided die? for a decision this important you need a dodecahedron die.

I don't want diesel, I just want to enjoy this truck again. About 20 years ago I quit driving it daily and about 10 years ago I sort of only start it up a few times a year. It just sits in one of my storage buildings. I still like it enough to not get rid of it cause I have always liked the look of it. Honestly, at this point it probably needs a lot of TLC, though it still starts and drives. I just want it to look and drive nice enough to go around town in.

So if anyone knows a shop I can drop this thing off at in the southeast (closer to Birmingham the better) where they can return it restored somewhat I'd love to do that.

FWIW, Nick Markiw (IIRC) ended up with 1:1 high range ratio in the LT230, using an Gen IV/6L80E in his 90.
Thank god for Ashcroft, I will be sending one of my t-cases to them for overhaul. I have been eyeballing their ratio's and for the LS swaps you can also go down to a 0.90 or a 1.00 ratio also.

Don't think I should be going that fast on 37's though. Need to make my engine decision first.

Oh I think Nick ran at least 35s, and towing a trailer on many trips.
Basically, you have twice the horsepower of a stock RV8, and about 30% more torque, and first gear in 6L80E is 4.027, compared to ~2.48 in a 4HP22.
The transmission alone would be worth the swap. Hell, I'd have this transmission behind an RV8.
