I just did an oil change yesterday and today after driving home from work I hear what sounds like engine knock. It almost sounds like a diesel. Not loud but just noticeable. I went from 10w30 to 10w40 for the summer. Weird thing I noticed was after the oil change the level was exactly at the high mark but now it about a 1/2qt over??? I've now heard this can and has happened on other cars and will eventually go away. Fuel has always been 93. Any ideas...valves...rockers???
Thanks, Brian

a bit more info

This morning I started her up and everything was fine, running the way it should. I drove a few miles for a fill-up and again everything was fine. Then after the rest of my commute to work, 30 miles, it was knocking again. So from what I gather it only knocks after it's driven a distance. I turned off the engine a let it sit a few minutes and started up again and it slowly began to knock. Anybody know what is going on?
Thanks,
Brian

I was using Mobil, 10-40 and sudenly it started to knock, the mechanic told me it was the lifters, and sugested to change to castrol 10-40, and wait, I accepted esqueptical, but the next day after the switch to Castrol the knock was gone, and it's been 1 month or so already, my next step was going to be Lucas Oilo Stabilizer, but, that step has not been necessary yet, good luck...

New oil change proceedure Rover 4.0/4.6

Hi just a thought I was reading my owners manual and in it gave a proceedure for changing the oil
First warm engine.
Drain oil and replace oil seal washer and refit drain plug.
refill with proper grade/quatity of oil.
Remove oil filter and fit new filter i would also pre fill the new oil filter.
Then start engine and let idle do not rev engine till oil pressure light goes out.
It also says that the reason for this is because of the possibility of losing the prime in the oil pump, if this happens you may have a full oil pan and no oil going to the rods/mains.
Just as a side note I have had viscosity breakdown using Castrol oil I now only use Mobile 1 or Valvoline,

Another thing you might want to check is/are the pulleys you might have to remove the serpentine belt to see its condition and if the Idler and tension pulleys turn smoothly, as well as the steering pump and alternator, also see if the nut that holds any of the pulleys on like the crank nut is backing off this could also cause a knocking noise, goodluck, Stan

Did you add enough oil? The knocking could be the sound of oil starvation. Similar thing happened to my old Porsche 944 after a oil change. Turns out the apprentice at the shop did not put enough oil after draining and changing the filter. I would start by checking your dipstick. My 2 cents...

I'm going to change the oil again to something heavier. When it's cold all is fine, but once it gets hot then it starts knocking. On top of that I will use textron on my next fill-up. I just checked the tensioner, alternator, and a/c compresor and they are all ok. It's, from what I can here, coming from the top of the engine.

Marco- Did it knock all the time once you put Mobil or just when it got hot like mine?

I pretty much follow the the LR procedure with an oil change and...according to the dip stick...It's exactly on the full mark.

Thanks
Brian

it was pretty much all the time, only a bit louder in the morning, but after Castrol was in, it just diassapeared in two days, and so far nothing, I measured the oil level when I had mobil, and it was just fine, now it runs great very smooth, the only thing bottering me now is the imfamous rotoflex, but thats another issue, cheers

update

After changing to 10w50 the knock has somewhat gone away. It's there but just not as prominate. The heavier oil is hiding it at this point. I guess it's just normal wear of components as I have 95,000 miles on the engine that I just haven't noticed yet.

I think this engine runs best on the heavy duty fleet oils that are built for diesel use (but gasoline certified) and packed with additives that handle the crud well. Chevron Delo 400, Mobil Delvac 1300, or Shell Rotella - all in 15w-40.

You might also want to drop your oil pan and make sure the pickup is not clogged. Pretty common. Your oil pressure is lowest when the oil warms, so your problems are most revealed then.

use 20w50 unless its really cold were you live-below 35, also put in two containers (i think they are qts) of lucas oil stabilizer....cheers. if it is just engine knocking all will be well. if its something else well...........

but that set up should take away any engine knocking. cheerx

too many oils to choose from, I'll just stick to my Castrol 10W-40
