I know there are other threads regarding this - but I thought I would start a new one rather than bumping an old one forward.
I am planning on rebuilding a replacement engine for my Disco 1 in the background while still driving my existing rig. I am currently at about 165K and the usual knocking - which I am pretty sure is the liner slipping (louder warmed up and at idle). I imagine I can still get 20 or 30K more out of it before it blows.
I have been looking for the unicorn red block 4.6 from a P38 to buy - but no luck so far (please PM me if you know of one for sale). I see several complete 4.0 blocks on Ebay (GEMS) that I can buy with shipping for about $1000 so that would be another option. I understand that the 4.0 can be upgraded to the 4.6, so that might be the easiest way to go. What I am unclear about is what gets changed in that process - is it the crank or the rods?
I have not ever rebuilt an engine - so this will be a bit of a project for me. Most of the hard stuff is of course done at the machine shop - so really it is an assembly issue, so I will need to make sure I have the right tools and techniques at my disposal. I'll need some advice from this forum for sure! I am hoping that I can come in under $4K all said and done.
I would be interested to hear from anyone who has done this - particularly the 4.0 to 4.6 upgrade - and any advice that you might have before I pull the trigger on buying the donor motor.
