No low-range, limited ground clearance and it's independent suspension are a few of the reasons.

It's fun to take off-road, just don't expect it to climb big rocks and stuff.

It just depends on what you want to do with it. I'll probably get hammered for this, but there are a few (very few) conditions where a stock Freelander is easier to drive than a stock Discovery. The Freelander is pretty good in some really slick conditions. I've seen them climb muddy slopes where Discoverys got stuck.

Just stay away from big rocks. It just doesn't have the clearance to tackle stuff like that. But I'd stay away from big rocks in a stock Discovery too!
