"From Quiet to Riot" - interesting wiring indeed

When I purchased my Discovery II last year and did the initial inspection I noticed the exhaust silencer (the middle piece) had a kind of protrusion on it, it ended up being an "exhaust electric cutout". These devices literally open the exhaust to the atmosphere, as the ad states you can apparently go from "Quiet For The Street, Riot For The Strip!!" (http://www.quicktimeperformance.com/QTEC/) When I think of drag racing naturally I think "Land Rover Discovery II" because of the awesome take-off speed. But I digress...

While the device was interesting it didn't work, a shame since I was really ready to go into riot mode while driving through the woods. Not really, the Disco is loud enough without an open exhaust. So I'm in the middle now of a transmission replacement and am removing it. What I found was a whole lot of work some previous owner did to go from quiet to riot - because he or she wired the thing to open when the auxiliary lights were on. In other words, when you kicked on the brights, you got the riot. The amount of wiring to accomplish this was amazing. First, this person obviously didn't own a wire cutter, because about 20' of wire was simply bird nested together and then taped to make a huge ball of electrically taped wire. There was one of these balls under the dash and another tucked between the battery case and body. The battery case/body one also included the relays that controlled this light and noise show. Altogether I threw out about 3 pounds of wire and tape, most of which had turned to the kind of goo mess only heated electrical tape can produce.

So while my Disco gets a new transmission and all new exhaust from manifold to tail pipe I'll remember fondly the party I never attended, of bright lights and loud noise. Somewhere I know my battery and O2 sensors will thank me.

Here, for no real reason, is a picture of the formerly riot equipped Disco II.

That is a fantastic story. Brightened my day after discovering an exhaust leak in my D1.
