Hey guys, I have a 2004 Disco that has 165k miles on it. Over the last couple of weeks it has stopped letting me fill the gas tank completely full. When I get about 16-17 gallons in it she stops taking fuel. When I crank up it shows just a touch over 3/4 full. What is the deal? This is aggravating as I have to stop even more often to fill it up. Thanks, Keith

The gauge seems to be working fine, however the most fuel I can get into the tank is about 19 gallons. Stu, how do I get to the vent tubes to give them a dose of STP? Thanks guys!!!

I suspect you wouldn't get 19 gallons in if the vent tube were kinked or clogged. But worth a look anyway.

I would bet it has something to do with your sending unit. Either the float arm is broken or detached, or the contacts are dirty, or some thing. One way to find out....fill the tank with gas, then remove the fuel pump unit to see if the tank is actually full or not. If the tank is full, you have a sending unit issue; if the tank is lacking a few gallons, then you have a venting issue.

All that pressure and flow is regulated by the EVAP system now. Purge line filled with decaying canister material or stuck closed will cause that too. System should be showing some sort of pressure code, maybe not a MIL light but enough to throw a code.

Have you got an OBD2 reader?

Swedjen, yes I have an OBD2 reader. Now the D2 will only take about 12 gallons of gas. I have to stop about every three days for fuel. I'll check the codes and see what it says. This is really annoying!!!

So in 5 months, you've gone from 19 gallons to 12. Sounds like your guage has gone round the bend.
