A quick inept scearch didn't turn anything up. A local guy is offering me a 03 freelander at a serious lowball price and i am thinking of getting it for my wife. What kind of mileage are you guys realisticly getting?

When mine runs, I guess about 17-20mpg.
Seriously, unless they have already replaced the engine, tranny and cooling system, and are including an extended warranty, it would have to be crazy dirt cheap for me to even consider another Freelander. And I mean like only a few thousand.

well, I sold mine after 4 rear main seals and a cv, and ird trouble and tranny f4 at 43,000. thats what happens if you go thru the pine barrens with your freelander...and rausch creek and paragon..it was my mistake, I should have quit after the 1st rear main seal. they did some exorbitant amount of warranty work, what a profitable car for the dealer

most the guys I ran with who had FLs then all, and i mean ALL have d2s or some other solid axled rover now

.. would I buy a freelander for $2000? NO! better 2k invested in a subaru GL wagon if your wife needs 4x4, also I'd rather fix an old pathfinder over a flreelander as a beater/keeper for snow daze

for a GRAND, maybe if it was in good shape, maybe

My prev and current DII have had more issues than the FL. For a daily driver, the freelander has been good to us. I wouldn't buy one unless the LR extended warranty was included. Actually, wouldn't buy any late model rover unless the extended warranty was included.

that would be an anomaly, from where I sit

.. most FL owners who wheel their riggs will concur, a disco is better if youre gonna wheel it.

if you try to drive your disco like it was a freelander it will break

it is also important to note the age mileage and usage of your riggs when posting that a FL was , in your experience, more reliable than a tried and true v8 combined with LT230 tranny and solid axels that evolved over decades than a more recently built and discontinued platform using a unibody,KV6motor and rather notorious F4 tranny..:smilelol:

are we comparing a 2004 disco to a 2004 FL?? I make my assertion having owned and wheeled both 2004s

From drilbit's original post, he stated it will be a DD for the wife and doesn't seem like they will be wheelin' the FL. We don't wheel the FL, it's my fiances DD.

we've got 55k on the '02FL that is a mall crawler and 66k on the '02 d2 that sees a few trails a month.

I really feel that the main reason to buy a rover with all its glitches, costs of ownership and eccentricities is to wheel it off the asphalt. wash dry and repeat.

.. I think there are other 4x4s that have much better prowess ON ROAD and are more fun to drive on asphalt, I like what Volvo has done ALOT, I enjoyed my one ride in toureg ALOT, and I was never able to find either to handle as well as the Bmw equivalent-what is it called an x3-never drove one but in my Fl was never able to keep up with one either...

for a DD, FL would be rather low on my list of 4x4 sport utes that arent gonna see obstacles. all the above rigs are fine for ski trips camping fire roads etc

its also the least desirable rover I would want to own..

just curious what issues have you had with your d2 that make it more problematic than
your 02 FL?
its only when you enter into the option of OHV use that FL becomes remotely attractive as a DD

I feel the same way about rovers, they are meant to be taken offroad.

I wanted to get an audi allroad, but my fiance refuses to drive a wagon. We looked at P38's but didn't want another gas guzzler. We are most likely going to replace the FL w/ an LR2 because the size is perfect for her and these little rigs do excellent in the snow.

prev '00 D2
headgaskets, TB replaced, trans lines replaced, rad replaced, valve job, hub assembly replaced(can't remember which one), all abs sensors replaced numerous times. Leaked water in from windshield and sunroofs(dealer and local rover shops could never fix the problem), and a few more issues I couldn't remember. Started leaking tcase fluid, oil and trans fluid then traded in for '02.

current '02 D2
headgaskets, power steering pump, abs modulator, 1 abs sensor, window regulators, and a few other issues I can't remember. Can't arm or disarm the alarm. As soon as I take the truck to the dealer the alarm works fine(drives me nuts).

'02 FL
VIS motors, coolant tank replaced and window regulator.

If drillbit is getting a good price on one, I say go for it. Hopefully the seller provides all the service records and every common problem has already been fixed.

btw, your rig is looking good.

I ended up passing on the car, it was cheap (2200) but had 70k on it and didn't appear to have been well cared for. The wife wants an infiniti G35, we shall see.
