Gun Safe-What do yall have?

I need to break down and buy a decent gun safe. I need it to hold 20 shotguns/rifles, it doesn't really need to be much bigger because a lot of my guns are nothing special. Most of them I use only to hunt, I'm not really a gun snob, but I do have several that are nice and are sentimental to me. I don't know much about them but I would prefer if it was big enough that you didn't have to bolt it down. I just moved to Gallatin TN and the Bass Pro is shut down due to the flood for a few months and I don't know where any other decent gun shops are around here to go look at some. It doesn't need to be temp or humidity controlled or anything like that. Size, price, and strength are the obvious priority in deciding on one. I would like to keep it less than $750.

ALSO, if anyone is familiar with gun smiths in the area, I need to get my SBE benelli set up for a sling, so I think I would have to get it drilled out and studded to mount a strap. I'm tired of trying to hold on to it dragging ass through a swamp...and I need a few other guns I have to get a few small things checked out.

educate me

My roommate knows a guy about to open a huge indoor gun range in the Galtlinburg area. I'll check into it and get you a name and number.

yeah let me know, if I ever head over there I will be sure to check it out! Gatlinburg is a little far from me, hadn't been there in years. I am close to Nashville.

I've got a Browning Medallion. They are a bit pricey, though. Honestly, I don't see the big deal with this thing. It's not the greatest use of space in the world inside. I wish I had the tactical model, as it looks far more useful.

I need to get inside and make some better organizers. I ought to get some of the door hangers as well. It just doesn't have enough space, and what it does have is poorly used by the shelves and racks it comes with. It is, however, quite secure for an average gun safe, but once you get into the 1500-2500 dollar price range, there isn't much difference between the options available.

I have some other safes as well, and some smaller ones, but the Browning is the big daddy around here.

Whatever you get, make sure it's got all the spots you need, and that it can be re-arranged if you need to do so.

Cheers,

Kennith

Costco carries re-badged Canon safes.

Although the electronic locks are handy, I'd get one with a dial and not the electronic lock. In the case of an electro magnetic pulse, a safe with an electronic lock is about as good as tits on a boar

Stu, those pendelton safes look nice. Cant find a price on them though...I bet they are $$$??

Rob, I might let you know about something if you can possibly get a discount. I need to get that peican back too! Yeah I've been trying to get this tract up here ready for deer season this fall. Been taking down a lot of trees to clear paths and trails, I still gotta bush hog it all and that will take a solid week. I need to plant, but I don't know if I will be able to get it out this year or not.

Mike, I just moved here with my folks from KY. I am helping them with the move and am currently job searching up here since Nashville has a lot in the biotech/science/health care field. I've applied for a few jobs and have a few interviews so hopefully something will work out. Then I will be able to get my own place hopefully. I still have my place in Auburn so I'll be back and forth.

Cold Beer, is the Champion safe better than the Cabelas badged champion? Or are they the same thing?

I have the "Stack-on" one from dicks. Its actually not bad and its hidden in my basement do I dont care what brand it is. Its more fire resistant than the cheap lockers.

if its the same as the stack on I got for free its a piece of crap. I didn't have a key and to get a replacement was a pain in the ass. It took less than 5 minutes of drilling with an almost dead harbor freight drill to open it up.

The difference between a joe and a proper thief isn't whether or not they can get into a safe; it's how fast they can get into a safe.

It's just there to delay them enough to leave it alone. With the proper amount of time, any safe is easy to crack. One thing that is not guaranteed to be available when breaking and entering is time.

Cheers,

Its not good for much other than keeping kids and nosey guests out

exactly, If you're gonna buy a safe - buy an actual safe, not a glorified Ikea cabinet.

My current is a "C" rated Graffunder:
http://www.graffundersafes.com/products/safes-weapon.html

It is built to tolerances such that a fingernail will not fit into the door/frame opening when closed, and pulls a vacuum when opening.

No safe is proof against a determined and equipped thief - but something like this makes it hard........very hard.
