From time to time I visit a local paper from a small town I spent about 20 years in. Just to keep up, look at the O'bits and shit. So I came across an article about a death on a nearby Interstate.

Preliminary investigation revealed - - -, 46, of Evansville, was driving a 2014 Freightliner semi tractor-trailer westbound on Interstate 64 near the 55-mile marker. --- was traveling in the right lane of Interstate 64 and was merging into the passing lane when his vehicle struck an adult male.

The male, identified as -----, 67, of -------, had parked his vehicle on the shoulder of the interstate, exited his vehicle and entered the lanes of traffic. --------- was pronounced dead at the scene.

I can only imagine why one would do that. Suicide comes to mind first but maybe something went wrong with his ride and he took a step too far. That's why I, the only couple of times I've had to pull onto the shoulder off the Interstate, go all the way into the grass. That said I see people all the time just barely past the white line, out milling about like it's a parking lot. Or changing their flat tire basically sitting in traffic. Stupid hurts, but your stupidity shouldn't hurt other people. That poor truck driver. The people immediately following (if it were me I'm not stopping, I mean why). The first responders, that's the kind of shit that leads to PTSD. That scene is something out of a Rob Zombie horror movie.

Train operators too -sucks when someone jumps out in front of one of their trains (Subway cars, etc). Can't stop and they have to live with it.

IDK that it was intentional, like I said driving on the interstate I see people pulled over and conducting themselves as if they were in their driveway.

About three years ago my son's GF left our house at about 10:30 pm to go home. Around 11:30 the wife woke me up crying saying that she had been in an accident and someone was dead. A flatbed wrecker was offloading a kids truck in front of his house, No hazards, no cones, no flares, and he had his brights on. She went by doing the speed limit (50) and the kid stepped out from behind the rig. They had to comb his brains out of her hair. I can tell you that, although she did nothing wrong, something like that has a profound effect on you.

This stuff pisses me off. I see people walking down the shoulder of the road all the time. Always at night. Always wearing dark colors. No attempt to move over as far as they can, no nothing. I really don't care about them, but I don't want to have to deal with the effects of their stupidity.
Stupid and selfish is no way to go through life.

I was always told when you must exit your vehicle on the side of a interstate, highway or two lane country road your clock starts ticking faster. Now in the days of everyone texting and driving your clock is ticking MUCH faster. Get the heck off the side off the road and secure your family first. Don't be a hero, call triple A.

two weeks ago I was heading to work and there was a police cruiser blocking the county road at the end of my street, long story short some 16 yr old kid dressed in black walking down the middle of a unlit road with a 55 speed limit . he didn't survive

Another sad example. Dad on highway at the back of the family minivan pulling the tire out the back.....and a car rear ends the van, killing him instantly.....

If you haven't had a chance to call AAA lately:
AAA tow truck operators will NOT allow you to ride in the tow truck.
Last year was a giant "go fuck yourself" from AAA.
Along those lines, the fuel pump went out in the 109 when living in Upstate NY. Had 2 Labs and my wife with me. AAA flatbed shows up, driver looks at the 109 and all of us then says leave the dogs and wife in the vehicle and after its on the truck you can get back in. That was 2009. Guessing we’d be shit out of luck today!

Taking the kid to Cincy Thursday for a post-op exam, running down I74 80 mph, I came upon two sheriff's vehicles (with their lights running) parked behind an abandoned/disabled/pulled-over car. Standing there was someone in plain clothes, with one foot over the white line in traffic. Most were getting over, some were slowing down, but dam he sure put a lot of faith in those flashing lights.

Locally AAA was great when my CPS went out and left me sitting in line at the bank. He came in less than 30 min. I was stand out side of Landy and he got straight to getting it onto the rollback. When we got in the cab he asked if I wanted him to mask up. I told him its up to him. I'm fine without it; and off we went to my garage.

I'm in Newburgh. Not many DiscoWebers in these here parts.
Originally from Evansville. Have a sister still in Booneville, kinda. Her and her husband spend the winter months in FL. I'm living in a little community outside of Indy right now, but looking to move closer to home this winter.
