How gracefully do DII's age?

When compared to a D1, how well does the DII age? I mean, there really isn't anything I can't get to/repair/rebuild on the D1. Are DII's basically the same in this regard?

Sorry barefoot, but unfortunately it's not too early.. the answer is no:) Right now the '99 D2 has the headliner out (which was saggin' anyhow) to track down a water leak, the three amigos seem to never go away, the hubs suck compared to the D1, pretty much everything about it sucks... that's why we love it, we're a Rover family 'round here. but the D2 is just more headaches with all the electronic crap:banghead:
Oh, I about forgot to mention that it takes someone more skilled than your average bear to change plug wires, unless you want to pull the upper intake... I know it can be done w/o removal, but I know that I CAN NOT change plugs on a D2 unless the engine is disassembled

Mine is aging quite well (~115K), thank you, and I have put it thru the wringer. The last major repair I did was a new radiator some time ago (I consider the coolant pump minor) and even still, the only things wrong right now are very minor:

-Worn rear bushings on the radius arms
-Weeping rear seal: x-fer case
-Clock light burned out
-Three amigos, which have been on for years, but the ABS and TC still work

And guess what, I think I have one of the first ACE trucks in NA (purchased 12/98) and ACE is still working fine (regular fluid changes and a couple of valve block filter changes).

It has it's share of trail rash and the color, instead of Epsom Green, could now be called "Scratches", but it doesn't leave a puddle anywhere and the sunroofs don't leak and there is only minor surface rust here and there on the frame.

I drove her a lot today, around 150 miles, first time in a long time as I've been tooling around in the Protege as of late to conserve fuel. What a blast, the '99 D2 is a truly great vehicle.

Pardon my stupidity, I'm still fairly new to the Rover community. What do you mean when you say three amigos?

Its coming up on one year that I've had my 00 Disco. I 've noticed some noises and small leaks but nothing major. It always seems happier after a day on the trail. After bouncing around at Shoe Creek last week I don't think it ever ran smoother. But i already started stashing some money for repairs/mods which ever comes first.

I had a 99D2 before the 04 I have now...it was great...I did have the 3 amigos one time....dealer replaced hub sensor. Other than that I had a transfer box leak. That was it...ran it to 88K....never missed a beat. My 04 is going well so far other than the tranny code that turned out to be a MAF meter...still under warranty...to 100K and 7 years...I bought the extended warranty for $1500.00 at a time when LR was still offering it...money well spent.

My engine blew at about 70,000 (took the oportunity to buy and rebuild a 4.6 that seems to be running pretty well right now).

Replaced leaking radiator at about 60,000.

Replaced throttle body de-icer gasket at about 60,000

Rear sunroof quit working and front one leaked. Removed (sagging) headliner to find both drain fittings in the sunroof gutter are cracked (hence the leaking). Will likely replace both sunroofs and headliner just to make sure I don't have to get back in there.

Replaced MAF around 70,000.

New NGK plugs and Magnecor wires. (Removed upper air intake to replace the wires).

Had Three Amigos a time or two. Shuttle valve failure. Reset the fault and it has not returned in over a year. If/when it does, there is now a kit available to replace the shuttle valve.

Rear seal on Xfer case leaking.

Been through 2 rear diffs. Rebuilt first while trashing the replacement.

Had front drive shaft rebuilt (center bearing actually had to be done twice).

Bought new rear shaft from GBR (although it seemed to be OK at the time).

1 front headlight and 1 turn signal were filling with water. The water in the turn signal got high enough (didn't notice at the time) to corrode the electrical connections (had to replace). Temp answer was to drill small weep hole under the each assembly (not through the lens). Eventually they will be sealed or replaced, but had bigger fish to fry at the time.

Most of the right side body is dented pretty good from pulling someone out of a muddy creek bed with very little room to manuver.

Entire truck is pretty well scratched to shit (I guess limb risers could have helped a bit).

Maybe I'm a sadist, but I'm still not sure if I would change it all if I could. I've had a blast with this truck so far. :bigok:

Having said all that (and knowing what I do now), I probably should have bought the latest model D1 instead as it has a shorter section after the rear wheels that clears a lot better when off roading.

But...since I'm pretty well commited now, I'm just going to have to live with what I have.

I'd actually like to modify the rear like rovercanus (I think it was him) did to gain a bit more clearance.

Some may argue, but I do like the Bosch engine management system on the D2s.

Thanks for all the info!

This was a main consideration in keeping our D1. That and the fact that it's been a great family vehicle and I can work on it in my sleep!

Every now and then a DII (like the G4) will turn my head...

2000 D2 - 126K and runs like a scalded dog. Lots of upgrades, some due to initial failures. Heads rattle like dice in a cup (rocker arms, I'm told) but it doesn't leak a drop of oil and I'm going to stick with it for the long haul. That plus it's almost paid for! Nothing else I know of will take you to more insane places in more comfort than these things will. But it's about to get really expensive as I'm looking at engine and trans and transfer case rebuilds coming up one day, new diffs, lockers, axle shafts, etc. etc. I'll have probably 50K in it when all's said and done, and it might bring 10K on eBay. Love is blind.

Ma's 2003 Disco II currently has 94K miles on it and has been nearly trouble-free (besides door lock issue).

From new to 94K miles it has only required:
-Brake pads ($50 total), still using original rotors. :D
-One new original tire and one full new set purchased at 80K.
-Serp belt.
-Clock bulb.
-Rear door latch required frequent lubrication to retract.
-Regular fluid/filter changes.
-ABS sensor covered under warranty.

Other than dealing with the coolant leak/head gasket issues that plague all early 4.0s, I love my DII. I've been driving the Defender for the last few weeks and decided to take the DII yesterday. I forgot how nice it is to have nearly unlimited power and a comfortable interior.

I would buy another without hesitation.

My axles don't float ... my ass is too big ... I'm not easy to work on ... yet I still induce irrational love from my owner ...

And for me, the 7 seats are necessary, and I never liked the side-facing ones in the D1 ...
