My DII with 91K miles had a coolant leak somewhere the water pump but after doing a compression test the mechanic told me it was the head gasket. How much would it cost to replace the gasket including doing valve job? THanks in advance.

I did my wife's D2 a couple years ago and also spent around $500.00 for parts and getting the heads/valves done. On a complete guess, I would think an indy shop would probably charge between 14-16 hours plus parts.. but I could be wrong.

Where are you located/what are you driving?

I'm located in Temecula, CA (Inland Empire they call it) and my drives the DII 2000 and mine was the 1994 DIsco I. I plan to do it myself but I'm not sure if I can do it. I do have the Rave CD, though. Thanks.

Ouch. I had my entire 4.6 rebuilt for $1800, including head work...

Dissasemble as far as you can go and take the heads in for work at a machine shop...

How the hells is it taking 14 hours to do the head gaskets!!!! Christ, I can do them on a 4v Mustang Cobra in 9, and that's taking it slow. I can do the things on a newer 300ZX Twin turbo in less time than a Disco?? Seriously, these things are NOT that complicated, how are shops actually charging 14 hours to do them?

I'm getting my head gaskets replaced soon. My local indy mechanic said he'd do it for $1300. Instead of getting the heads machined, he's gonna replace my heads with new ones and my old heads he will use as a core charge. He said it's cheaper that way. Also, he said it will be a 2-day job.

To cover cleaning, vary careful removal and torquing of all bolts, repair of stripped threads, removal of rusted bolts that break off in the aluminum, removal of anything that came anywhere near the aluminum and rusted solid, bloody knuckled back breaking wrench turning in terribly ackward positions and with a high amount of very carefully placed force, replacement of hoses that have solidified on their fittings, and shrunk around the lips needing to be cut away carefully, cleaning the pieces of hose away that are still stuck to the fittings, you know, those sorts of things.

You would have to be crazy not to allow yourself 14 paid hours to do the work on someone elses Rover. Head gaskets are a royal pain in the ass with an aluminum block, and even moreso with a vehicle that has expensive parts occasionally made of unobtanium.

You ever see a wuss working in a Rover shop? It takes balls to do this stuff, and all the while a feather touch. I've done them myself on a few. One was a nightmare, and made me look like a fool, the others fine, but no small potatoes, either. The last head gasket job I had in, I farmed out to someone. I think I paid around 1800. Newer models aren't so bad, but you still have to plan for a headache. At the very least, you will be replacing some exhaust manifold bolts.:D

Most vehicles tend to have an iron block, possibly aluminum heads. You throw an aluminum block in there, and you had better be damn careful working on those bolts.:D

Cheers,

Kennith

I hate to break it to you, but you won't be getting new heads. Not at that price. You may have known that already, but I'd be hesitant to use heads rebuilt by someone that I can't get ahold of.

Climb on in there and get to work friend! I hope you have 2 - 3 inches of lift on your truck, as well as larger tires, and a big ass winch bumper or at the very least a brushguard on the front with aux driving lights. Maybe your truck also has mud all over the engine bay that you have to contend with. Of course, you may have been considerate enough to yourself to hose most of it out of there. Ready? GO! I'm timing you.

The job pays 8 hours plus the busted stuff. Unless you're very careful, and have heat available, the manifold to cat studs will break off. Add a set of factory reman heads for $600 and about $500 for gaskets, fluids, etc, and you get the idea.
Factory reman heads, at $300 each, are actually a pretty good deal. You get a fresh resurface, the latest valves and guides, and a valve job for a little over double what you would pay for a decent job locally.

Re: How much is the standard cost for head gasket replacement including heads macining?

I Would Aggree With Frick On The Time But Thats For Warranty Reapair Times Also If You Are Getting Lr Reman Heads That Is Also A Good Deal. Most Shops I Know Of Here In Ri And Ma Upcharge 1.5x Warranty Times For Out Of Warranty Cars. So A Customer Out Of Warranty Can Expect To Pay 13 Hours Just For The Head Gasket Job. Never Mind Any Diagnosis And Pressure Check And Of Course Those Rusted Bolts And Bad Hoses Everybody Else Spoke Of. Just Be Happy You Dont Come To Our Store, Currently We're Charging $2800! For Head Gaskets Including Machine Work.

To Be Honest If You Have The Time Most Of The Work Is Straight Foward And Anybody With Some Mechanical Ability Can Change Headgaskets In These Cars............now Freelander Is A Different Story:d

Good Luck

Mitchell time is 8.1. LR warranty time was 6.2. Hell, a whole engine only paid 8. At LR, we always disassembled, cleaned and replaced the valve seals for another 3 so we could eat. Dump a couple buckets of that really nasty carb cleaner in a metal garbage can and soak the heads in it. After 3 hours, they come out looking like new!
