So I just picked up a 02 freelander and I have a few questions . First the trans slips in all forward gears . The prev. owner assured me this was just a fuse. What fuse ? Also there is coolant leaking out on my feet when I drive it and it seems to only run on 3 cylinders . I have added about 12 bottles of stop leak but it still seems to leak. Oh one more thing when I can get the trans to grab there is a loud clunk from the rear when I take off from a stop . But I did get a good deal so I have about $300 to spend on the truck . Any help would be appreciated .

Really ,I thought these were good cars ? Got a couple more things to ask about . My rear windows just fell into the doors (both of them ) , my tail door wont open , coolant was leaking from under my intake manifold until my coolant reservoir exploded . Now that leak seems to be fixed but its running a little hotter now . My turn signals just make a buzzing noise when I try to use them . That damn door under the steering column is just hanging there and won't close . I'm wondering if the check engine light works cause I never saw it and its barely running now . Oh ya , the intake manifold was making a knocking noise . Is that even possible ? I tried calling the guy that sold it to me but he won't answer the phone . That's weird cause he was always available when I was thinking about buying it from him . Now it looks like its got a really bad exhaust leak at the flex pipe on one of the catalytic converters , make that both of them .

Call your local Land Rover dealer, they have service and parts departments that can help you out.

I'm told a Freelander will run circles around a Defender off road.

Oh Jimmy , please don't do that again . I've never seen a Freelander come out for an offroad event and leave without its muffler in the cargo area . But did you ever notice that's what people say when they bring in there new prize Freelander . " I got a really good deal on it "

Very funny. I actually have an 02 Freelander. Got it new for the wife when they first came out, and it's still running. It's like any machine, take care of it properly and it will last.

I'm not trying to offend you , I just havent seen many good freelanders . The list of crap I listed wrong is all the common failures we deal with everyday . How often and how far does she drive it ? What's the climate like were you live ? How many miles does it have on it ? I'm not trying to be an ashole (rt now anyway ) . I'm really interested in what type of driving these things will tolerate .

It's driven every day, mostly short trips around town here in NJ. It has also been to California a couple of times, as well as Florida and Canada. We also used to take a 300 mile round trips to upstate NY in the summer when we had our trailer on a permanent site up there. It's approaching 100k miles now. Never used it offroad, that's what my Disco is for. And it is garaged.

I think the key is regular maintenance, done by a local independent shop who happens to specialize in Land Rovers and other european cars. I work on the Disco, but not that much on the Freelander - too much of a PITA to get to anything on it other than the normal stuff like checking fluids, changing lightbulbs and such.

I'm not going to say that there hasn't been issues, it's a 12 year old car and shit happens - but it's been wear and tear related for the most part.

Sorry to hear so many problems, sounds like you picked one that wasn't maintained. I drove mine tons, and off road, I loved it. I did end up blowing out the rear main seal on the engine a couple of times (thank goodness for extended warranties) by going in mud and water about 3 inches over the windshield wipers a couple of times. And I did end up out climbing a defender 90 on an icy hill climb once on a winter run (and try as I might, the owner didn't want to take my advice to lock his center diff). It wasn't until about an hour later that he noticed it wasn't locked. Funny.
