If no CDL - why not just leave the diff locked?

What would be the downside of leaving my center diff locked all the time?

There are times during everyday driving where all 4 wheels need to turn at slightly different rates. For instance a sharp turn, the outside rear wheel moves a lot quicker than the inside front so if the CDL were locked the slowest wheel would skip, and the fastest wheel would skid, this effect would be lessend by the axel diffs, but would still lead to premature tire wear. Try it out, roll the windows down and turn as tight as you can in a parking lot, then do it with the diff locked, you will hear much more tire scraping in the locked scenareo.

It's not just tire wear you have to worry about. Slightly different rates will build up differential torque stress between the axles and sooner or later cause failure somewhere in the drivetrain.

Isn't this the reason they took out the CDL? so soccer moms wouldn't try to drive around on the tar with it in?

soccer moms wouldnt engage it to begin with, any soccer mom would also notice the difference in the way it drove with it on. only a complete complete moron would not be able to tell the difference. they took it out because they engingeered what they thought would work better, an electronic system. good idea on paper, but as you know they put the old deal back in the '04

I find it humorous that you made a blanket generalization of others mental abilities (presumably to elevate your own) and in course made a huge type-o, failed to re-read your post before submission, and have let it remain uncorrected. And I am supposed to take you serious regarding technical issues? This reminds me of the oil change post...
JK - all good fun! I am trying to come out of the CDL conundrum as inexpensively as I can, hence the query.
Thanks for all the good feedback!

Well I have a physician friend, female, who is pretty intelligent in general. But she took her truck in to the shop because it became "very hard to steer". Turns out she (or maybe someone else) had engaged the diff lock and did not know. Did not have the slightest clue that harder steering is at all related to that little lever. I asked and she had never read the owner's manual :(

So my point is almost everyone would notice the difference. BUT, I bet most people would not make the connection between the difference in steering and have the CDL locked. Especially if someone locked it before they got in to drive the truck.

LMAO:smilelol:

In addition to everything mentioned, when you started your car up again, with the CDL locked, you would lose your ABS & ETC.

Maybe it's just me, but "If no CDL" means you don't have a Center Diff Lock,

how would you be locking it, if indeed there is no lock/CDL?

However, if you have a CDL, and drove around with it locked during everyday driving, it would quickly destroy the vehicle.

i thought i answered your question clearly. my soccer mom deal was responding to someone else. im not sure of the connection between typing/posting quickly and knowledge of technical issues. but i'll remember next time if you have a question that i cant type well when in a hurry and keep silent.

Most, if not all, MD's do not read the owner's manual.... if you are lucky they actually take care of the vehicle....How come she did not see the indicator light for the diff lock being on?:banghead:

Since the roads are nothing but ice here I don't think leaving the diff locked is going to hurt it very much.

but even she still knew something was wrong. that was my point in "anyone would notice and not drive around with it locked forever"

in ice i always leave it locked, it obviously wants to spin out alot easier if it isnt. but aparentlt i can't type well so what do i know?
