I'm replying to myself to hopefully get this in front of some of you who might have missed it.... I read about rovacom lite in the rovers north newsletter and am thinking about buying it. It's pretty expensive at approx $1500.00 with all the bells and whistles so I really need to get some help in deciding. Does anyone have one?? Is there any other products I should look at before getting this?? Has anyone heard anything negitive?
Thanks
Gordon

Sorry Ididn't realize you didn't know. Rovacom lite is a software and hardware package to communicate with the various computers on 96 and later disco , range rover and freelander. According to rovers north webb site it will actually do more stuff than the land rover test book and the other big expensive shop grade diagnosis stuff. It runs on a laptop and connects to the disco via a box and several special cables. I'm interested because I do computer for a living( which means I'm crazy enough to work on this stuff) :) and I'm really tired of my not to close dealer and his high prices. I'm really interested in having the ability to do ALL of my own repairs in house.

Sounds like a nice package to have, but way too pricey for a DIY-er in my opinion.

In the interim, do you have a copy of the Rave CD? Less than $20 bucks and it'll help you with probably 75% or more of your needs.

I have the Rovacom setup for my D2 TD5. Like it a lot, Its enabled me to change the locking and window options, turn on speed locking and courtesy lights etc with out a visit to the dealer each time and $100 a pop

Also has helped me find out where the 2 SRS faults I've had are occuring and enabled me to beat the dealer over the head to fix em under warranty.

Also recalibrated my ACE to allow for the heavy winch, sill armour and diff armour (much better handling now) and to recalibrate the SLS to allow for fat old me so the car sits level now

Its also nice to know I have NO fault codes on any system

Its expensive but I believe worth it, especially if you like playing with your car

Oh yes, you can also make the disco leap about like one of those stupid show cars using the SLS manual controls (albeit a lot slower than theres do) ;)

Also found out that the D2 has a Police mode setting, but nobody seems to know what it does!!!

Tell me a littile more about this rave CD... I haven't a clue what it is (I guess I don't keep up ) I'm really interested in the rovacom lite because I tend to keep my vehicles until I've reached really high mileage 250000 typically so I will get my money's worth out of it. I also know it is upgradable over the webb to test d2, rangerover freelander soon etc. so if I decide to move to another LR I'll just upgrade as needed. I also just got an estimate from LR to fix a couple fault codes and they are talking 1200. with those kind of prices 1500 just desn't seem so high!!!
Thanks again
Gordon :)

The RAVE CD is the maintenance manual that I assume the dealers use on a CD. It is in adobe acrobat format. Very helpful to have. I think that with a standard code reader is sufficient for most of us. The rovacom thing seems pretty sweet though.

I would love to have this, but what does $1500 include? I am assuming it does not include a laptop, but does include everything else needed.

I just priced the Rovacom lite system and it was just over $4200, just D2 compliant. Where did you find it for $1500. To get it compliant with all Land Rover vehicles is around $6500.

I believe the 1500 is the base price for a D1 without any options. I looked into it myself, and just can't see spending the money unless I decide to start working on Rovers for a living.

Full D2 (TD5) costs ?1230 which is about $2000 (Ouch!!!) I bought mine in drips and drabs as needed which helped. You need all the hardware but the software is all controlled by licence keys

Check out http://www.rovacomlite.com which has prices

Its 2 hardare modules and connector cables that plug into your laptop. Still a HELL of a lot cheaper than a testbook system

Ryan,
I got my RAVE CD on ebay for $15.00
Do a search on ebay and they'll be plenty to choose from. It should be 2 CD's that cover RR, Defender, DI, DII, etc.....
Great CD, and cheap too.

Shane,

Thanks for the advice, I found it on ebay for $9.99 .. if anyone else is looking for it, search just for "RAVE" under ebaymotors.com .. "land rover rave" or anything similiar doesnt show results.

Sorry about the threadjack!

For those interested Rovers North has rovacom lite for approx 1500 for basic disco d1 including the engine software, and added software licenses for starting at about 100 ea I will probable buy the basic hardware and license for the engine only to start ( includes sme stuff for abs because they connect) I talked to Arthur at Rovers north and he really knows what it can do and not do in it's various forms... I was particularly interested in the fact it will access and modify many things the test book won't ( probably legal reasons LR won't let it techs do everything) I'm a cheapskate and don't like the price but in the long run can justify it if I own enough LR prods. which is likely...
Thanks for all of your input on this
